I will be going to Hawaii for few months..
I'm a serious arachnophobic, experiencing incredible fear, even panic at the sight of ANY kind of spider. Please don't tell me to seek for help or stuff like that..
I have been reading forums and stories of people living and visiting there..I can't even think about having an encounter with such spiders, expecially the cane spider..I'm terrorized.
I'm from Europe and here we don't have such big spiders so those things are incredibly huge to me.
I'll be staying around Wahiawa area and I wanna know everything that can help me to keep them out of the house, areas to avoid and every useful detail..

Spider interaction is unavoidable in Hawaii - especially when you get to the less urban areas like Wahiawa. Go to Walmart and bug bomb the home and get some traps before you move in and seal up the gaps at doors and windows. Then hope for the best.

Get a cat - they kill spiders.

Avoid cane spiders - well, definitely avoid sugar cane fields!

Wrap the house in saran wrap and duct tape to keep them out. Those buggers can get throught he smallest cracks.

To avoid them outside, cash the ticket in for Hawaii and vist someplace else cause you can not avoid them since this is their habitate.

Odds are you may never come up close and personal with a spider but since you have a serious issue with them, you have to know your stepping into their playground when you come to Hawaii. You may see only a few or you may find many every night crawling over you. Just a fact of Hawaii.

You will be fine

They only gang up and carry off one or two people a month

The rest of the time they just like to sit and have morning coffee with you

Really its not bad I never see cane spiders

RedRose, having a severe and totally irrational fear of heights, I can understand your fear of spiders. Can you have Terminix come spray the house inside and out before you arrive? Also, you could apply additional doses of a good insecticide weekly (yes, it's overkill, but it's for your piece of mind). As far as where not to go, stay away from any place that has a lot of landscaping and don't go walking in any rural or undeveloped areas.

Let's see: spray toxic chemicals all around where you will eat and sleep and breathe in general -- because you have an [irrational] fear of a tiny, harmless arachnid? I don't have any problem understanding that a person has a phobia ... it is what it is ... but combating the phobia of something harmless by doing something actually harmful seems a bit misplaced, no? Perhaps consider hiring a local handy with swinging a shoe to come in once a day and "clear the perimeter and camp" would be workable?

Good luck!

Well, Honolulu in a very well maintained hi-rise that is diligent in spraying for insects, and even then no promises - heard Trump Tower is pretty nice.......

I can readily understand your fear; my SO has the same type of fear, but of snakes. We spend two+ months a year in HI, and have never come across a cane spider or any other spider. Lots of geckos and ants, but nary a spider.
