OpenD provided some good informations and I just want to add my 2 cent to this.
Matson does not have a monoloply on transporting goods to hawaii. Any shipper legally allowed to ship goods within the USA can operate to and from Hawaii if they like. Matson has a regulated monopoly on Inter-Island sea shipments. They have this because their rates are set by the state and is based on leveling shipping cost throughout the state versus on a per destination charge. If it cost $100 to ship a stove from CA to Oahu and another $35 to ship it from Oahu to maui, or $40 to Big Island, or $55 to Kauai, the rates would look more like this, CA to Oahu $110, Oahu to maui add additional $33, to Big island $40, to the Kauai add $45. Because they have this regulated monopoly they are required to ship to all ports, and their rates are determined so that it levels out the highs and lows making shipping possible. If Matson lost the monopoly and it was open to all, rates to oahu would drop and those on Kauai would need a second mortgage to ship a stove. Maui would also see a rate hike but the Big island becase of defense subsadies would remain the same.
Is it true Matson owns Pasha? When I called to get rates a guy at Auto Budget Shipping insisted Matson owns every shipping company from Hawaii to CA.
But yeah the airfare rates are crazy for 35 minute flights.
Shipping a vehicle from anyone other than the "big three" (Matson, Pasha, Horizon) means you are going through a broker. A search of auto shipping will reveal that you may not want to do this.

I ended up not going through the broker even though it would have been 50-$75 cheaper. The guy really had no idea how to answer any questions that I asked. Went through Pasha and my car shipped this week.
