I've pretty much made my choice for Maui and will hopefully be moving from San Diego in May or June. I also have a web/seo firm and would be happy to discuss some partnership opportunities and ideas.

Let me know any snags or info you come across on the dog transport. I've checked out the websites and will probably hire one of the services to make sure everything goes flawlessly so I can focus on other parts of this major move.

Any input would be appreciated. I'm having a tough time choosing between the big island and oahu because.

Big Island
- I could buy a house, within my price range.
- Only 150k people live here? I wonder if it will be hard for me to hire people here (I do web design and programming related stuff)
- Is the surf as good as Oahu?
- I'm not into partying or clubs, but wonder if the small town vibe here can get boring after a while? Is there still stuff to do, cutural events, etc?
- How is the crime and school system for kids in Big Island?

Oahu
- Like the idea of a bigger work force to draw talent from
- I hear there is a lot more stuff to do, city plus out doors
- Traffic and tons of tourists doesn't sound so great (I live in Miami now and am sick of that) but i hear you can escape on the other part of the island.
- Buying a house would be out of my price range, but rent is affordable in places like kaliua. I'd have to save up a lot longer and or buy a fixer upper here.

Thanks much for your help!
Those are also the two islands I'm most interested in. For similar reasons. Oahu as it's with Honolulu and all the large city amenities. The Big Island for low priced real estate.

Just looking at your cons for the Big Island. If you have two kids, I doubt you'd need much 'outside stimulus' of cultural events, etc. I just have one kid, and I find that they bring in a whole other world of many responsibilities and things to do (their school, their friends, etc.), that looking for other entertainment that I might be interested in, is a luxery I seldom find time to do.

On Maui it's about a 30 min drive from Kihei to the surfing spots along the road to Lahaina.

Nice, small world. Will send you a PM.

What are these dog transport services? I haven't heard of any of these.

I don't see many properties/rentals on maui for less then $3500. Seems even more expensive then Oahu?

Pet relocation services handle all the paperwork and scheduling for moving your pets to Hawaii. We used AkonaPet when we moved our 3 pets over. AkonaPet Pet Relocation and Hawaii Animal Quarantine Specialists

right now is high season for rentals so there isn't a lot of inventory. Supposedly when I'm moving in may/june there will be a lot more inventory. But yes, I'm not seeing anything worth renting for less than $3k. There are some apt/condos for $2k but they don't allow big dogs. This may be an issue so I'll probably have to find a house to rent.

Akona pet is one service I've heard good things. I think there was another. For a few hundred bucks I think it is worth it to have them help and make sure everything goes smoothly. I've heard some nightmare stories and there is so much other stuff to remember and track with vehicle and crate moves, registrations, moving logistics, etc.

Big Island
- I could buy a house, within my price range. With a huge yard to accommodate the big fella (I love mastiffs)
- Only 150k people live here? I wonder if it will be hard for me to hire people here (I do web design and programming related stuff) Very hard
- Is the surf as good as Oahu? Nope, not even close
- I'm not into partying or clubs, but wonder if the small town vibe here can get boring after a while? Is there still stuff to do, cutural events, etc? Normally getting drunk, playing guitar, shore fishing, getting into street fights, teenage pregnacies are the usual activities.... Get a 60" LCDTV, Wii, Netflix streaming
- How is the crime and school system for kids in Big Island? Don't know this one

Oahu
- Like the idea of a bigger work force to draw talent from Also bigger competition
- I hear there is a lot more stuff to do, city plus out doors Yes
- Traffic and tons of tourists doesn't sound so great (I live in Miami now and am sick of that) but i hear you can escape on the other part of the island. Sure but it will take forever to get there, heh. The tourists generally stay within Waikiki limits, only encountering them on H1, traffic however.....
- Buying a house would be out of my price range, but rent is affordable in places like kaliua. I'd have to save up a lot longer and or buy a fixer upper here. My coworker still lives in Kailua in his condo with wife and 2 boys going to private school. They won't consider moving until kids graduate, but by then they won't need a house and would be more efficient to stay in the condo.

Thanks much for your help!

Good luck finding a rental house that will allow the dog. You should definitely visit all 3 islands first before you move. You have been here before right? Few condo complexes allow dogs at all and the ones that do usually have weight limits (like 30 lbs).

SoCal is very dog friendly but a lot of homes/apts don't allow big dogs. Yet I found places that even said "no dogs" would soon bend the rules once I met them and/or they met my dog, or if I promised to keep the dog in the garage, etc. There seems to always be some sort of compromise. Especially in a home and not some corp apt/condo complex.

Hopefully I'll have the same luck in Maui. I can't get rid of my baby and she's going to be 60-70lbs.

I'm with you, except my dog is 170lbs! I havent had an issue because usually the owners meet me and think I'm a stand up guy and don't care. I also don't volunteer his weight or breed.

But yea, no condo's for me. Need a single family house.
