As an aside, you may also want to consider changing your cell phone number to
one with an 808 area code as soon as reasonable. I don't know if you can do it
prior to moving to Hawai'i. I suppose it depends on your carrier. People in Hawai'i
tend to be a bit more receptive to calling a "local" number rather than one from
out-of-state. I know it may seem like small stuff, but it might likely make
your initial transition easier when looking for a residence, etc.

Nahhh, it's really not an issue anymore. Now that 1/4 of all Americans carry a cell phone without any landline, and "long distance" has stopped being a billable item for most users, it hardly matters today.

I would disagree. I got much better treatment and prices after switching to an 808 area code.

You can have both. You can get a Tracfone for $15 and they will give you whatever area code you want. Then you only use the phone for calling or receiving 808 to stretch out those "pay as you go" minutes.

You can have both for free by signing up for a free Google phone account, and then forwarding incoming calls to your cell phone.

I just haven't run into any issues, so I don't bother.

Google phone does not have 808 area codes.

And as others have said, not having an 808 area code means many people won't bother to call you - especially if you are looking for a job.
