I met my core group of friends through Meetin.org (which is like Meetup, but is specific to different cities - they have one in Honolulu but not other islands) And now that I reside in the Syracuse area, I've met the majority of my friends here through Meetup

it works. When I moved here I vowed to get out more and meet more people. It's been a great experience.
