According to a lifelong Oahu resident who maintains a blog, the box jellyfish are back. I've studied these creatures a bit, and as I understand it, the sorts that visit Hawaii aren't as deadly as in Oz, but, nonetheless, not a good playmate.

Here's another info resource:

box jellyfish information page, Official Web Site for The City and County of Honolulu

And here's their real-time reporting map:

Hawaii Beach Safety

I've always wondered about the lifequards' folk-remedy for box jellyfish stings, a paste made of meat tenderizer and vinegar... since meat tenderizer is made from papaya, wouldn't a poultice of fresh papaya help?

Not that I intend to ever have to test this theory out, but I do wonder about it sometimes.

Vinegar is what the scientist who study these things use, and have, occasionally, had to use. It immobilizes and prevents the firing of any more of the stingers which are like an inside-out sock being forced rapidly right side out while penetrating the sking. The velocity of the firing is incredible. Luckily the species in Hawaii are not the real bad boy C. Fleckeri. Meat Tenderizer and other urban-legand type remedies don't help. However, a Colt .45 might, in some cases, be desired, at least temporarily!!

What I don't understand is why they call the arms on at Octopus, tentacles, when they are only eight of them?

The word tentacle is derived from the Latin word tentare, which means to touch or to feel. An organism can have two or more tentacles.

I would have thought Eightacles would have worked, but I don't speak Latin, except for the Bacon variety.
