If I had only $5000 in my bank account and I moved to Hawaii, would I have a hard time living there. I'm still young, 30's. I was a paramedic in a different state and have a A+ certification, so I know some computer stuff. Would I be able to transition? Are jobs hard to find there? I have a wife and two kids, but they live overseas in South East Asian at the moment. Hawaii would bring me closer to them.

I think the Big Island is in your future.....

Posted by Wantingmoreinlife: "Don't be alarmed. I am relocating to the BI in January 2014 and I have done my homework. You can live in anything from a coffee shack to a giant mansion depending on your standards or your money situation. You can also do work exchange. I have found several VIABLE options for off grid places for around $400 and even a few with electric for around $500. Of course they are one bedrooms, but I have a smaller family. (3) I am going to rent first in Hawaii to make sure that it is compatible and then I will try to invest. I suggest you do your homework, study climate and animals, and ignore people like viper! Anything is possible with enough research and determination!"

$5000 is plenty. Boomer1235 was going to make the move to the Big Island as well with that budget.

Sure. Why not?
You will have plenty of company.

The young and the penniless | West Hawaii Today, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

snippet from article:

"...While the area still has the traditional resident homeless who have become familiar faces to the police, the new influx is a different category, Assistant Chief Paul Kealoha told the Police Commission on Friday.
“They’re done with college, and they’re in transition,” Kealoha said.”They’re living out of a backpack. … They move on. They’re just doing their world tour.”
Kealoha said Kailua-Kona is listed as one of the top 10 destinations for the backpackers on Google searches of services.
Commissioner John M. Bertsch said he’s seen some of the backpackers panhandling at intersections, carrying signs such as “too cute to be broke.”

Best to stay off this Island. Big Island Puna district is a better place for the OP.

Why would you move anywhere with no job lined up? That doesn't sound wise to me. Why not move where your family is?

Awwww, those guys are kidding you. Everybody here knows there are no jobs on the Big Island. It has maybe 7%... try wait... umm 12%... no, try wait, try wait, Imma guess 25% unemployment right now, and that doesn't even count all the people who don't have jobs!

But Honolulu, that's a real bucket of Paradise for you. Lots of jobs available, maybe $7.75/hr, and up to 20 hours a week. Put two or three of those together, rent a bunkbed in a flop house, and wow, you'll probably be able to eat almost every week!
