If this was a thread on natural beauty of a state than of course I wouldn't be thinking of NYC as the only part of New York state. I've always wanted to visit NYC as I've never been to the Northeast and I'm sure it's very different from Hawaii or the west coast. If I ever do visit New York, besides visiting NYC, I'll make sure to also take in the beauty of the countryside

As of the 2012 census, NYC has a population of 8,336,697, and NY State a population of 19,570,261. Granted, that doesn't take into accound the suburbs but there's not a significant amount of NYC suburbs in the state or in general. The geography if a bit wonky. NYC itself is a bit sprawling, with the multiple burroughs. The only things that are suburbs of the city that are actually within NY state are Long Island and Westchester county. Everything west of the city is in NJ. Everything north of Long Island is Connecticut.
I suppose that nearly half of the population living in NYC could skew things, though.
I do hope that you visit upstate NY in addition to the city. Just know that it will take some planning and extra time, because of what I said about the geography of the NYC area, it's pretty far removed from everything else in the state. The catskills would be the easiest place to visit from the city, it's about 2.5 hours drive. To Niagara Falls is around 6.5, to the finger lakes around 5, and the the Adirondacks 4.5.
