Ok folks. If you wish to define culture as bug acceptance, sumo watching, Korean soap operas, spam eating, bugs, multiple houses on a property, and the Governor wearing a lei, I'm all with you. By some of your definitions, there is no such thing as a culture as that can apply to city to city and state to state. Personally, I don't think a few outlier traditions defines an entire culture when 90% of day to day living isn't much different than the mainland.

You left out Mai Tais. That's a huge difference!

How bout those 49ers. And, that's part of Hawaii's problem. No pro sports, and the Warriors football team SUCKS!!!!! The feeling in the entire state back when Colt Brennan was QB for U of H, and they went unbeaten, was totally different than the feeling today. Amazing what a winning team will do for the disposition of an entire community, especially in a state as small and isolated as Hawaii. Unfortunately, there is no fix, as the University of Hawaii is a joke, which makes sense, considering the 'pool' they draw from.
Chances are, the Mai Tais were invented by Trader Vic's, Benihana's, or some similar Tiki Lounge. Am I right?
And didya know that fortune cookies were invented in San Francisco as a marketing gimmick for a Chinese Restaurant? Yeah, you probably did know that, having lived there. I was served some at the end of meals in Tibet last summer. There's some globalization for ya!

I just don't think your a part of what is different. I think it's as simple as that. Your not hanging around in the garage drinking because you don't have parties in the house, you are not associating with people where manners lean more to the Japanese, or part of the other Asian households on the North Shore with farms, the surfer crowd, the 300 people luaus for a baby's first birthday (or wedding, or graduation), not part of the culture where both your parents AND your kids live with you, or the ones who do not like the aggressive mentality of those from the mainland.
We are different enough that transplants sometimes have trouble adapting and I've seen them leave the job they came here for. Caucasians don't have much experience being the minority, and that's a huge slice of culture shock.
