PacIOOS | Projects

I spend a LOT of time on the water, paddling surfski, normally south from Kama'ole One down to about Polo Beach and back, about 6 miles. There have been quite a few shark sightings as of late, along with what proved to be a fatal attack off Palauea Beach a few weeks back. Now, I'm of the mindset that paddling off Maui, in the ocean, (of course), is a hell of a lot safer than spending any time in the cross walks on Kihei Road, but, I never kid myself about the ocean, it's a lot of water, with a lot of critters in it that would be more than happy to grind on humans, left overs or otherwise. All that being taken into consideration, they now have tagged some of the larger tiger sharks, and, guess what, YOU CAN TRACK THE FISHIES ON LINE!!!!!!! I mean, really. Now all I need is one of those 'beeper' alerts on my boat........

beep..............beep..............beep.......... .beep......beep....beep...BEEP.BEEP.BEEPBEEPBEEPBE EPBEEP!!!!!!!!!

Hey, whatever happened to that Jungjohann guy who used to post here all the time?????????????

I saw a ten foot tax collector surfing once. Only about 10 yards away under the crest of a wave. Turned around and hurried in. Not a fan of those guys.

I saw that on the news too! Kind of creeped me out. Do I want to know where they are, really? LOL I just hope Laverne is still at Honokohau, she's kind of an icon around here.

I agree, WAY too much information. I curse the day the movie "Jaws" came out. I try really hard not to think about being part of the food chain when I'm snorkeling. But thanks for making me smile, Jungjohann!

It gets better. Of all the sharks they tagged, every one is a tiger shark, and all but one is female. The females are all of the 'large' tiger shark variety, as in, FAT. Sooo, they've tagged ONLY tiger sharks, almost ALL are female, and the females are ALL fat. How the hell is that for profiling? I mean, couldn't they tag at least ONE reef shark? They've got teeth too. Or maybe a cookie cutter shark or two, they might not bite off an appendage, but they will wear you down one tiny mouthful at a time.
As far as the female tiger sharks are concerned, I've noticed that two of them are always seen in the same vicinity, so, I would have to assume that they are traveling together, kind of like a team. I'm not trying to anthropomorphize shark behavior, but, given that these two ladies already have a bit of a weight problem, are being electronically followed everywhere they go, and have been profiled, I would hate to think that they might be two pissed off lesbian sharks as well.

Guys, stay out of the water

I can just hear the conversation between those two sharks, too. "So, do you think this tag makes my tail look fat?" Or "the color of this tag is just so last year, just what where they thinking?" Yup, you got two unhappy sharks there alrighty.
