My family is moving to Hawaii in two years. We have narrowed the choice to kauai or maui. We are working on our plan for this to happen. Here's a little background, my husband and I are in our 40's and our teenage son will be joining us. We are looking forward to leaving cold weather 6 months out of the year.
I am an RN(8 yrs), with med-surg and home health experience. I'll finish my master's in nursing education this year. After reading all the information on this forum, obtaining a job is definitely a concern. Here's my dilemma, Is there more of a need for nurses with home health or med-surg experience? (I want to make sure I have recent experience) I would hope to find a position at a local college teaching, although not counting on this. I could have 2 yrs experience in the teaching field by the time we move, if I get a job when I obtain my master's but am afraid if I go this route no teaching jobs will be available and I'll have no recent experience in hands on nursing. Thank you in advance for your help.

How about calling the hospitals on Maui and Kauai and asking their human resources people which they prefer? Are there any medical teaching positions on either of those two islands? I think Hilo is getting some medical classes/programs, but you'd want to check with the U of H to make certain of that if it was important to you since I'm not sure.

IMHO you're better off getting good bedside patient care experience---with that, you'll have a better chance of getting at least some kind of decent nursing job in Hawaii. Try to get all the certifications you can---they love love LOVE certifications here. The basics, of course (BLS, ACLS, PALS), but then on to national certification---they're so much easier to get now---everyone I know who sits for the CCRN exam passes. When I got mine many moons ago, there was only a 60% passing rate. IMHO the national certifications don't mean squat but, as I said, they love love LOVE certifications here. They're getting Magnet-Status-happy here and they love to see that national certification on your application. Get your certification in Med-Surg and you'll have an edge.
Home care? Meh. Lots of poorly-regulated "care homes" and home care agencies here. IMHO, again, doesn't do much for your resume and working conditions can be pretty sketchy. I wouldn't want to be going into some of the places where some patients live, either.
Your chances for a full-time well-paying teaching job are slim to none. The pay is generally crappy in education and the full-time openings are few and far between. I work with many nurses who have their MSN's and even a few who have doctorates that do some clinicals with students but they wouldn't think of giving up their FT hospital jobs for a FT teaching position.
So, build up the med-surg experience and certs, get a job, and if you still want to pursue teaching do it after you get here. Might even snag an in-hospital job in nursing ed, which can be quite lucrative and easy on the ol' back.
JMHO, of course, but there ya go.

Good site, but those are only listings for state-run facilities---just a clarification.
