Youthful retiree, single, male, not member of the rich elite, renter, would like to know if a good studio apt or little cottage would be affordable on $3,500 p/month on the big Island? Also, do Hawaiian's like the banjo? If they don't, I wouldn't want to disturb them. Do people play music and jam outside ever? I don't need to work anymore but I like to play the music of many instruments to a small audience, or a casa de centipedes. Anyone, is there a VA Medical Center on Oahu or Hawaii? Bob

Is that retirement income subject to state income tax or not? Do you know the difference?
In either case, yeah, you can find something, because there are lots of little illegal rentals around. Good? That's very subjective.

I wouldn't want to bad mouth banjos... is that a mixed metaphor?... but my advice is to plan to focus on the ukulele, which is very popular and played everywhere by people of all ages, sizes, etc. There's lots and lots to learn about Hawaiian music. For even more challenge you can learn slack key guitar. But embrace what is already here, rather than, well, you know...

Yes, if you like to smoke pakalolo and play in drum circles you should fit right in.

Yes to both, but check out the recent threads here on the subject about availability and wait times.
OK, I didn't want to have to get this graphic. I was hoping a little gentle dissuasion would be enough. But OK, here's the straight scoop...
The sound of banjos has been proven to attract cannibals, and to drive them into a horrific violent state!
But hey, if you want to take your chances on winding up AS the luau, rather than AT the luau, who am i to stop you?
Rmfao, good one Open and i would have to agree. I was just listening to Dennis Kamakahi - Wahine 'Ilikea when you postted your post and i have to agree banjos just don't fit. We in Hawai'i are a diverse and accepting bunch but sometimes somethings just don't need to be changed. What do you think? OP you may want to listen.
RE: my banjo, what a disappointment to find out that you Hawaiians don't value music in general; just Hawaiian. That question was a cultural test and all but one flunked. I also have a portable recording studio, own many guitars, build guitars and record music. So, I guess I might find Hawaiian culture too provincial and narrow-minded for me. But nonetheless, thank you people for the great insight you didn't know you were imparting to me, but I think I'd be better go off to the land of my people, the Vikings. Any place that doesn't enjoy a good banjo player is a place one should avoid; I have never, anywhere heard negative words or vibes about the banjo until now. It's good to know this before I waste money on travel and expensive pineapple. I won't be seeing you in Honolulu anytime soon, bye, Bb

Wow, what a difference a day makes! Just yesterday you said that if Hawaiians don't like banjo music, then you wouldn't want to disturb them. You sounded originally like you were eager to make a big effort to fit in, then PUFF, you come across with a really rude attitude. Those of us who live here are really, really glad that you won't be coming. We kind of like our "provincial" "narrow-minded" culture
Of course you won't be seeing us in Honolulu, Bob, we live on the Big Island! Honolulu is on Oahu and it's too full to properly enjoy banjos.
Bring the banjo, but stay away from Volcano or OpenD (hey, that's the tuning for an ukulele, so he's biased) might toss you in with Pele. Try us on the other end of the island, up towards Honokaa. We like music up here and we have lots of cowboys and musical folks of all kinds. I'm not too sure about the kazoo band, as far as sounds go, but they sure seem to have fun. So, if we can handle kazoos, a banjo shouldn't be a problem at all.
If you want cannibals with your banjos, that would be Maui. Probably it'd be zombies on Oahu, I'd guess?
We don't see so many Banjo Trolls around here...thank's for coming!
