He has relatives we can rely on for housing until we get jobs and our own place, but what about moving our belongings? Did you find difficulties with shipping? I hear shipping cars can take a while, what about shipping containers?
As others have said, jettison just about everything. Try to make it back with just a couple suitcases each. Don't ship any furniture, totally not worth it. Probably not worth it to ship cars, that is going to be very, very expensive. Simply sending a car from coast to coast by truck in the lower 48 will cost several thousand dollars (ripoff). So sell everything you can when moving back to the lower 48.

Especially when moving to a major metro like Atlanta, because the Atlanta-metro area is huge. Over five million people live there, which is about five times the entire population of all the Hawaiian islands. Bottom line, you'll find what you need in Atlanta and the surrounding areas, and it will be cheap, and there will be tons of choice.

But when moving back, you are going to have lots of space, lots of choice, lots of prices to choose from, especially in the south. This makes the economic transition easier for sure; if you need it, it will be available, at a competitive price.

Really? I sent my car from San Diego to Florida several years ago, it was around $1,000. That was 10 years ago, but prices couldn't have gone up that much.

We will be moving in about 4 years for retirement. We want to be able to travel easier and be closer to family.

We were looking at Sedona, but will look at the Carson City and Genoa area.

Does anyone have a general cost for shipping to West Coast for a 4 bedroom home? I can't imagine selling everything and starting over.

Heck, the houses we are looking at are bigger, would need to buy some furniture anyway.

Detroit to Portland in 2013 was $1100.
Detroit to Kona was $2500 (trucking, shipping, and brokering) in 2015.
Both of these prices was for a compact SUV.

You could give me that property plus match the price with cash and I'd still not move to that three ring circus sideshow!

Retired to Hawai'i when I was 37 (or was it 38?). Own land and am building my home mortgage free and completely off grid.
Both vehicles bought and paid for and no debt (nadda, zilch, none).
All because me and my wife decided long ago to live for ourselves and not for others. While my neighbors in the suburbs were fighting to see who could have the best house, vehicle, lawn, toys, etc - we lived modestly, saving and investing. And now we are here, and my days are so laid back that more often than not I can't even tell you what day it is... sometimes I even get the month wrong... truth is I don't even care!
I'll not trade this for anything.

See you when you get here kid.
