Mobiles are not popular here. Shipping costs are high for mobile homes and they fall apart fast in the humidity and salt air.

A mobile home is built pretty much like any other home. Florida has much higher humidity, hurricanes, tornadoes, and who knows what else, and look at how many mobile homes are there! One would last twice as long in Hawaii's milder climate. It isn't the construction, or the shipping (every thing else has to be shipped to Hawaii), it's the fact that the state does not want trailers there. Doesn't go w/ the carefully crafted Paradise mythology, even though a nice trailer would be lots better than some of the shacks you see on the islands. Moderator cut: inflammatory references

If you are not Hawaiian or Asian, you will quickly learn that mobile homes are not the only things that aren't popular in Hawaii. But that topic has been covered pretty well here and in many other places.

On another note, Hawaii is warm/humid year round. I was in Florida in the winter and wanted to go back to Oregon, where it was actually warmer that day. Btw I never experienced racism anywhere in Hawaii. Even 'local' strongholds. I just acted like myself and not an ar**h***

Default still wondering...

i appreciate the comments posted here so far but no one has directly answered my question yet...are there any mobile home parks anywhere on the islands?...the closest reply yet is the one where someone said the state doesn't want them...does that mean they are illegal?

I think the first thing you see on the news after a tornado or hurricane on the mainland is normally a mobile home park that has been ripped to shreds due to the high winds and lack of adequate tie downs securing the mobile home to, "the planet". As a retired building contractor I can understand the states reluctance to allow mobile homes into the Islands. As far as the "old" shacks are concerned, I used to live in one up on Omoapio Road and Kula Highway upcountry here on Maui, place had been there for well over 70 years, and is still there, who knows how many storms/hurricanes it's been through.

Aloha and okolemaluna

I don't know of any, and a search of internet sites where mobile home parks are listed by state did not turn up any.

The following may tell you why:

Maybe not illegal, but definitely not easy.

How do I find a decent shack or something similar to buy there? I will have less than $80,000. Paul is 58. I am 47. He is on disability. I am paid to care for him. We don't need a lot of $ to live on. We want to be near Ram Dass and nice people. We make good neighbors and friends and even have references to say so! Herbally friendly folks too. Thanks for any ideas.

Try Ocean View on the Big Island. You might find something in your price range such as a liveable, but non-permitted building with a composting toilet and catchment water and maybe electricity on 1 acre of lava rock. However if you folks need quality medical care near to your home, you won't have it.

Since Ram Dass appears to live on Maui hopefully some Maui residents will chime in with some ideas for you.

Personally I am thrilled with the fact that we don't have trailer parks!
