Eddie Went | Mana Magazine

I met Eddie and other members of the Aikau ʻohana several times when I was a kid, and Nainoa's a friend and mentor of mine.
Jonah,

Hows the OC paddling in that nice, warm, clear ocean off Manhattan Beach..............

I grew up with Marshall Rosa as my calabash Uncle; he was always so funny and gentle with all of the Keiki.

I put this post up with the thought of remembering some one on a day that was special probably forever. A feel good thread from the past by someone I thought was an amazing surfer and waterman. I'm not on island nor I have I ever met Eddie but the skills in the water that he had were amazing and quite inspiring. HBH I was surprised by your posted being so critical of dreaming and grassyknoll. For someone with the aloha spirit from many of your past posts I'm summing it up to season effect disorder due to your crummy weather. If you want to continue on with the negativity so be it enjoy your thread

I agree. A thread about Eddie Aikau shouldnʻt contain all the off-topic sniping and stuff that's going on. Iʻd much rather discuss Eddie, Clyde Aikau, Nainoa Thompson, Mau Piailug, Abraham and Gordon Piʻianaiʻa, and the Hōkūleʻa. Or even the lawsuit that the Aikau family filed a couple of years ago over the movie rights to Eddie's life story.

Great guy! He built my first surf ski, the Rose Ski. I paddled once in a little race on the Ala Wai way back when, just borrowed a boat and jumped in last minute. Kala and Marshall SMOKED my okole. Later, when my first ski got karranged, Marshall built me one special, it was supposed to be 'karrang proof'. It's still on Island, I gave it to a Hawaiian buddy, ex-lifeguard, now fireman. Kind of fitting.

If it weren't for the perfect ocean here around south Maui, I would have moved back to the mainland a long time ago. Just to add, it amazes me that with all the people who frequent this website, ocean activities are not mentioned more often. And I don't mean going out on a whale harassing boat. Last time I looked, there was a hell of a lot of ocean around here...

I agree. You'd think that they would have a "swimming," "surfing," "sailing," or at least an "other sports" section over in the Sports Forum.
