I did look it up with the question: What percentage of Hawaiian islands is privately owned and didn't find anything. Anyone know off the top of your head?

Roughly speaking - the State of Hawaii owns nearly 40% of the land, the Federal Government about 10% - and the remaining 50% privately owned.

Not necessarily -

Kamehameha Schools - owns 363,000 acres

Alexander and Baldwin - 113,000 acres

Parker Ranch - 107,000

Those top 3 landowners own about as much as the Federal Government.

Pretty much. You have to budget really well, helps a lot, and a good job would help!!

Or, as in our case, have a good retirement pension and live in a very rural area of the Big Island. Good houses on 1/3 acre go for less than $300,000.
