So where do hapas sit? For example, if you're half Japanese and half white, do they just flip a coin; heads - Japanese, tails - white and then plop you into that category? Nearly 1 in 4 residents of Oahu are mixed race. That's huge. Also, why does Native Hawaiian fall into two categories?

Considering that whtviper1's "statistics" came from an unknown and uncredited source, they aren't particularly useful. Here's a link to a PDF of the U.S. Census Bureau's "2009-2013 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates" data for Hawaiʻi… http://files.hawaii.gov/dbedt/census...s13_hi_5yr.pdf
So it is majority Asian then. Will this be very evident upon stepping out of the airport? It seems like the Japanese and Filipinos are the largest group. Do they each have their own enclaves?
When Hawaii is portrayed on TV it is usually the native Polynesians and their culture, plus the white tourists that you usually see. The Filipinos and Japanese are never represented.

Hmmmm, very evident? At least in Honolulu, Honolulu International Airport is practically surrounded by US military bases and military housing - so it might not qualify as "very evident" until you get more than a few "steps" away from the airport.
Is there a strong Filipino and Japanese flavor to Hawaii? Or are these mostly very assimilated groups?
