Is Hawaii an overwhelmingly asian/polynesian state? Are the majority of the inhabitants a mixture of chinese/japanese/etc with native hawaiian?

I ask because I just watched the Bourdain episode. I started searching on Wiki, could not help it.

Is there a particular group more numerous than the next?

So where do hapas sit? For example, if you're half Japanese and half white, do they just flip a coin; heads - Japanese, tails - white and then plop you into that category? Nearly 1 in 4 residents of Oahu are mixed race. That's huge. Also, why does Native Hawaiian fall into two categories?

Considering that whtviper1's "statistics" came from an unknown and uncredited source, they aren't particularly useful. Here's a link to a PDF of the U.S. Census Bureau's "2009-2013 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates" data for Hawaiʻi…

The folks at infoplease.com are using old data from the 2000 Census, so that's probably not the best place to look.

Hey, you are right, good catch. I just noticed us white folks are becoming more prominent compared to 2000 - go us!

So it is majority Asian then. Will this be very evident upon stepping out of the airport? It seems like the Japanese and Filipinos are the largest group. Do they each have their own enclaves?

When Hawaii is portrayed on TV it is usually the native Polynesians and their culture, plus the white tourists that you usually see. The Filipinos and Japanese are never represented.

Hmmmm, very evident? At least in Honolulu, Honolulu International Airport is practically surrounded by US military bases and military housing - so it might not qualify as "very evident" until you get more than a few "steps" away from the airport.

You want very evident - step on out to Waikiki.

Is there a strong Filipino and Japanese flavor to Hawaii? Or are these mostly very assimilated groups?
