Thousands attend Blaisdell job fair, despite Hawaii’s low unemployment | KHON2
There was a job fair today for Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.
Pearl Harbor’s Naval Shipyard had hundreds of openings. Check out JOBSUSA for information
Public affairs officer Sean Hughes said many people are retiring, so the shipyard is looking to fill positions vacated by employees who have been working there for decades. We get thousands of people who apply for jobs each year,” he said. “This year, we’re hiring 548 positions. That includes trades, production-type positions, engineers and a variety of other jobs too.”
Despite Hawaii’s low unemployment rate (3.2 percent in December 2015), thousands of job seekers packed the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall Wednesday.
There is a slim chance, but what do you have to lose!!
I won't offer you advice except to NOT move here. I don't want to support any more people who can't support themselves and judging by what you've written I doubt you can support yourself here.
Driving a bus doesn't pay much more than minimum wage. You'd most likely need a CDL B plus air brakes and passenger endorsement along with a current medical card.
Then you'd need a place to stay that you can afford on a $12 - $16 per hour job. Frequently driving a bus doesn't have a steady schedule, so having a second job becomes more difficult, too. $12 per hour is about $1,500 per month, you're not getting your own apartment with that (if you want to have enough left over to buy food, forget about owning a car) so find an apartment to share. $16 per hour is about $2K per month, still pretty tight with renting an apartment, but you may be able to have your own place if you don't own a car and eat a lot of saimin.
But, why should the tour company hire a mainland person who is going to go back to the mainland within a year when they can hire a local person related to someone already working for them? They get the gratitude of their existing worker as well as someone who has to behave because their uncle or auntie is keeping an eye on them as well as the company.
