That's why one succeeded and the other failed.

I had tons of failures, instead of complaining I adjusted, I changed, I learned to do it the way that was required at the time. No government handouts, no credit card until my 30s, double jobs, learned everyone's job above and below mine.

No complaints, only what is.

Do you really think you and I have things in common?

(Hint: We don't)

Really? When was this supposed change from a ducking to a dove happened in your life? 80s? 90s? And what do you really know about me Mikala43? Besides your hate of my ideology? Hard work? Try being your own boss and creating a business out of nothing, not getting paid for along time. I don't know what you perceive as complaining? Except for Ideology that I believe has more to do with your perception of class, then really who I am really. Unless of course I'm misunderstanding your post?

I know what my weakness and strengths are. I will admit that one thing about me that holds me back is I don't play personal politics. I'm a principles guy. I won't ask for something if I haven't done the work for it.

Success versus failure?

Opinions, ideology, class ...... none of that nonsense has anything to do with success or failure. You are a whiner. End of discussion.

Now that was funny. You might actually have a future career in comedy.

To clarify - HBH is the whiner, not Mikala

Too bad this discussion got derailed so badly, the first page was fascinating. I really wonder if it's possible to find ways to stabilize the real-estate market and make it affordable for the working class here in Hawaii.

WaikikiBoy had some great ideas, I've had similar ones, but haven't dared to speak them. Here's what he wrote in https://www.city-data.com/forum/44249493-post5.html:

"1. Put an end to sprawl by creating hard growth boundaries and sticking to them.
2. Reduce foreign and mainland residential real estate purchases by imposing a large capital gain tax on residential real estate sales by non-resident owners. Something like 50% or 60% tax. This will be a large disincentive for people to buy in Hawaii.
3. Create a disincentive for people to move to Hawaii by increasing the Income tax (to something high, like 30%) for all residents but then providing a "Long-Term Resident" deduction (for people who have lived on island for 5 or more years) that will bring the income tax rate back down to what it is now."

I really wonder if #2 and #3 are legal, or rather constitutional at the state or national level. I've always thought that you couldn't achieve any effective barrier legally. Which would be an argument for some sort of autonomy (sovereignty or some sort of compact such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compac...ee_Association). I think it's worth examining more plausible scenarios.

Well - nobody really answered if you became unfriendly to non-residents, how do you incent skilled labor (for instance-doctors) to move to Hawaii?

How about all the people who moved away from Hawaii for career reasons (not just money) or whatever reason and want to move back?
