Could someone please list all shipping options for household furniture that can pick up from Texas (I cannot drive it to the coast) and ship to Maui? I want to make sure I get all quotes from all available companies. Thanks in advance.

I don't know all of them but try PODS. You need to be in a major city for PODS to work out.

I guess a first step would be to contact the big guys -- Matson and Pasha. They can give you a quote door to door. How much stuff are you bringing? Do you need a 20' container or PODS?

We hired a location mover to pack our container for us in Denver and had someone on this end unload it for us. Made it a lot easier.

You'll probably have to get an AG inspection at some point. Either on the mainland or here on Maui.

Shipping currants is tricky business.

No can help, it's the Kona's

Who did you end up using? We don't need a giant container. Packing one king bed and mattress, one dresser, one couch and China hutch, and one bunk bed set.

Matson, even a 20' can, is way overkill for that little amount of stuff. The cost of shipping is such that you either bring it all or don't bring any of it. I would seriously consider not bringing any of it, save $5000, and just buy the stuff here.

If you do go with PODS, look very carefully at their insurance. They charge a lot for it but if you read the policy carefully, it does not cover much. For instance it does not cover fire or loss of the container or breakage. What's the point?

We have used both PODS and Matson. Matson is the better deal if you have a lot of stuff. PODS is more convenient.

So then someone could steal your stuff and it's not covered??? Or fire? Destruction??? What in the world?

Talk to your insurance agent. It's been almost seven years since we moved, but I think that our homeowner's policy covered us during the move.

There is also the option of selling everything on Craig's List or at a yard sale and then replacing it by the same means once you're here. Little more effort, but you'll not have to pay shipping. Hotels are frequently changing out their furnishings, so there's usually used hotel stuff around. Most of the Hawaii hotels are the expensive type, too, so they have pretty good stuff.

Depending on where you move to, there could be a lot of humidity. Antique furniture and furniture made of press board don't survive well in high humidity. Leather will mold and mildew. Also houses in Hawaii are frequently much smaller than their mainland counterparts, so smaller furniture may be in order.

Which area of which island are you moving to?

For clothing, natural fibers are much more comfortable than synthetics unless they're new special synthetics. Loose cotton clothing is much, much more comfortable than polyester.
