Honolulu has about 35 free over-the-air TV stations, Maui has about 17, Hilo has about 20. Between the free TV and the internet, we have never missed having (or paying for) wired/satellite TV.
Here's the current lineup of OTA (free) channels we get in Orchidland. If you get additional channels on the East side of the BI, can you please post?
Was hard to make the formatting for this work. The bold part is the channel number and network, then a description of the network, then if its not a major network a link to the channel's website, on my computer the link is underlined, YMMV)

The trouble is, of those over-the-air channels, we rarely watch any of them. I watch NFL football and we used to watch Downton Abbey on PBS. That is it. The bulk of what we watch is the premium channels. I suppose we could sign up for just HBO through Amazon or something. Not sure about others, like AMC and ESPN.
There is a new streaming service that will soon be offered by Google called YouTube TV. YouTube TV will have a channel package like cable TV or satellite TV. The cost is $35 per month. They won't carry all the channels that would be available on cable TV or satellite TV. In addition to their basic package, they will have 'add on' channels. They also will have a cloud DVR that supposedly has unlimited concurrent recording, that is included with the basic package.
The problem with the streaming services is you need to have a decent Internet connection and each hour of HD quality streaming is 2.3 gigs. If there is a data cap on your Internet service, you might exceed you downloading data cap, if the cap is too low. Where I live, the data cap is 1,000 gigs per month, which should be enough for our Internet usage. Exceeding the data cap increases the monthly charges.
We actually don't watch a lot of the broadcast TV, almost everything we watch is Netflix and Amazon Prime video or something else on the internet. Most "smart" TVs now have no limit to how much content is available. Some of it is free, some of it is not. All assuming you have access to the internet bandwidth, of course.
After Iselle some of the OTA channels were knocked out but surprisingly most of them worked, and most of the ones that were out came back relatively quickly. People with wired connections (including internet) were without any source of outside television. It's not a bad idea to get setup to receive the free local broadcasts even if you have cable or whatever, because after the next big storm it might be the only thing that works for awhile.
Not sure if Oceanic is Hawaii-wide or just on Maui.
We have DirecTV because we had it on the mainland but it is unreliable in really bad weather here. So we're looking at cable, which would be Oceanic. One thing you get with DirecTV is if we forgot to record a show you can pull it up at any time and watch it. It has lots of other on-demand things like that. Anyone know if Oceanic does that? Any other likes/dislikes for Oceanic?
Thanks
