Try 'maika'i, a 'oe', which is 'fine, and you'. And if you're having a crap day, 'pilau nui' can come in handy.

as newbies, perhaps it's best to just reply with your usual greeting when someone says "hi, how ya doing".

"howzit" is "hi, how ya doing" sorta condensed. It's also a way for folks to see if you're from around here or not.

I have yet to hear that "How'zit" is a screening tool to see if you are from here...anyway; all how'zit means is equal to "hi, how are you" in a casual way. I would advise not to try and get fancy by replying with a Hawaiian phrase that you are unfamiliar with. The person may come back with further conversation in Hawaiian or look at you confused. Reply with language that implies, "I'm great, how you" or something similar. How'zit is used by locals and malihini alike. It's usually a mistake to try and copy Pidgin language or use Hawaiian phrases you don't understand. How'zit is one of the many phrases that newcomers get accustomed to first. Be yourself; other things will follow

I agree 100% with the idiocy of trying to use language you don't understand in a setting you're unfamiliar with. However, if you're here on something other than the one Island two year package, it might behoove you to learn a little more about the history and language of this place other than 'howzit' and 'how far is it to Costco'.

Just sayin, but, then again, I've been here too long
