What follows telling people you are moving to HI are far too many opinions you never asked for. I am assuming that I am not alone in this experience. Smart retorts, anyone?
I would say 75% of the people I have the discussion with don't get why we would ever want to downsize our life so drastically, and choose to live more simply. They also ALWAYS site the expense/cost of living on island (as if we are unaware or hadn't stopped to consider it).

Well, if you want to get into the island spirit, just thank them for their concern and move on. No need for hard feelings, life's too short to sweat the small stuff.
Of course your friends in Ohio or Kansas or wherever have no clue why you want to move to Hawaii. Especially if they've never been and only know what they see on HGTV. People who have never even been to Hawaii will tell you all sorts of horror stories.
Agree with Grassyknoll. Why do you need a smart retort? It's your life to do as you wish!

Oh no hard feelings. Smart retort as replying back to them with something witty. Nothing mean spirited. I actually find some of the opinions quite entertaining. Especially from those that have never been to any of the islands, and are going off of what they have seen on TV, as Dreaming Of Hawaii mentioned.
Tell them you changed your mind and you're moving to North Dakota or Wisconsin or Minnesota (or pick somewhere else totally opposite from Hawaii) and then see what they say? Ask them if they are going to visit you after you move?

It depends. If you’re in your working years, there are jobs in the upper Midwest that pay a lot of money, but the climate is cold most of the year. Low pay and a very high cost of living is life in Hawaii. If you have boatloads of money, and are willing to spend that money, or drastically reduce your standard of living, you’ll have a better chance of successfully moving to Hawaii. Don’t count on your friends and family visiting you in Hawaii. It might happen once, but more likely never. You’ll be the people doing the flying, if you can afford to leave Hawaii for trips. About 95% of the people that try moving to Hawaii only stay 1 to 2 years. Many leave Hawaii financially ruined, taking decades to recover, or never recover financially. Maybe you can beat those long shot odds. Most people are hesitant to “bet the farm” on a move to Hawaii!

If you can't be bothered to live a minimalistic lifestyle before you move to Hawaii - then your chances of succeeding are probably low if all us a sudden you had a flash of minimalism once you get to Hawaii.....

Dave, you keep saying things like this and I keep asking for statistics to back up your claim. Haven't seen any yet!
