I imagine that the rental car shortage is very good business for ride share and taxis.

Please write an email and/or letter to our Maui County Mayor. It's outrageous.

Maybe you could convince them with your 16% income tax theory? Everyone knows tourists pay an unfair amount of Hawaiian income tax.
Oh they don’t?! Haha someone doesn’t know how the economy works! Do you think businesses and business owners pay it? No, they charge more and pass taxes on. I own a business, that’s exactly what I do, I literally charge more for business in LA to make up for taxes the city charges. I’m not paying them! My clients can pay. That’s how the world works - now you know.

Do you actually believe that when people decide that they want a tropical vacation they worry about a possible tax increase for locals, or care that the police arrested Pandemic lawbreakers last winter?

"THAT'S IT!!! WE'RE GOING TO SOUTH DAKOTA INSTEAD!!!"

It doesn't work that way. People know that a Hawaiian vacation will be expensive but they come here anyway.

Income tax has a negligible effect on the price of tourist activities. Restaurants paying $25k, $50k or even $75k per month in rent is a big driver in the high prices for dining yet popular ones operate at full capacity much of the time. The same can be said for most activities.

This year the lack of rental cars may be the one thing that slows tourism from the mainland. Vacationers have been showing up at my building in U-Haul trucks, Surf Truck Rentals and even on motorcycles because there were no cars even though they had reservations.

Maybe you are the someone who doesn't know how the economy works!

Do not fret - expect tourism to take a big hit on Maui with mandatory test on arrival about to come - nothing like booking a $700/night vacation and getting a false positive on arrival and quarantine for 3 days waiting for a PCR result.

And Scott's comment is impossible - almost no international bookings and domestic capacity is not at 2019 levels.

Not sure which source is correct, but this article seems to say the opposite of what you are saying about March visitors. Not sure how your source could have the March data in mid-march?

EDIT:
Ok, it looks like this article is comparing to March 2020, when travel was probably starting to be restricted, so the numbers are probably lower than 2019. But, it is an encouraging trend.

I'm hearing that rental car prices are starting to come down. So keep checking and rebook if you can get a better deal!

I think because far less people coming than Spring Break -cheapest rate at Honolulu airport next weekend is $130/day which is better but high.

Hotel occupancy has come way down across the islands but the prices have not - the new normal is high rates and accepting lower occupancy.

Things likely to be slower until Memorial Day weekend when high season officially begins.

Avis OGG location is still showing sold out for my dates. We're still debating if we will go to Maui in Aug or pick another location.

Ironic since the Avis/Budget location for Kapalua Airport (near Kaanapali) appears to be closed with dozens of cars parked on their lot. Perhaps they all need repairs?
