There's quite a group here on Maui working towards sustainability. Not because we expect an eminent disaster, but because local sustainability just plain makes more sense. We are working to encourage governmental progress, but also strongly concentrating on individual sustainability.
Gardens - personal, community, school
Alternative energy - wind, solar
Conservation - reducing waste, reusing, recycling
Shared resources - local resources instead of remote, sharing our excess in trade for someone else's
There is a great site for conservation and shared resources called Freecycle. It's nationwide, with three chapters on Oahu and one each on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. Here's one:
Freecycle is pretty amazing. I've seen offers to give away just about anything, even running automobiles. I'm sure there are folks in Puna building houses off freecycle. Every day there are offers of free lumber, roofing, windows, etc.
Yup, I've given away a gazebo, a sewing machine, and a neighbor's over/under washer/dryer. All working, just not needed anymore.
I love Freecycle, and highly recommend it too.
Selling things via word of mouth works well too. Right now we've got a 20' teepee for sale. We figure someone must need it, whether to sleep in, or to have a shadey spot for the yard, or for personal ceremonies.
I think there are only one or two lepers still alive. The colony has been defunct for years.
Talk about being cut off - Molokai has fallen on hard times, compared to Maui. The ferry is struggling to stay in service, the air service now only goes to one airport, and the schools are really having a hard time.
I think taking refuge there would be a mistake; they need to keep their remaining resources for the folks who live there now.
