The safety inspection sticker on the bumper of the car is when the car was inspected and the sticker on the license plate is for when the car registration expires. It is easier to have the two several months apart so you don't have to get a new safety inspection at the same time you re-register the car each year.

Once you've registered, they will sent the renewal in the mail so that can be mailed in and the sticker put on the plate when it comes back in the mail. The safety inspection requires the car to be looked at by someone at a garage or gas station. So if they are several months apart, you've had time to send in your registration renewal and to get the sticker back to put on the license plate. Then when you get the safety inspection they can just apply the new sticker to the bumper and you are good to go for another year.

Thanks for the info sweetbeet but in tennesse they really dont care.......I have had many cars and trucks and they could care less if you move, sold, or changed your insurance.....it sounds like in NY its little bit of an over kill and buying plates for two years kind of sucks......plus by law you have to have insurance but if the car is paid off then some or more than you think do not or will not get insurance....so theres not whole lot of regulation
