good morning everyone..I'm currently living on oahu. I'm looking for a 1 bedroom condo in oahu for the month of July. My two young boys are visiting me for the summer from the mainland.. I'm willing to spend under 2000 a month. Any suggestions?
When I am looking at Craigslist for vacation rentals, if the post doesn't have a link to a legit looking website, I don't even consider it. I did find a great place to stay on Maui from CL. We are making our third stay there in June. You can find some "last minute" deals on there, with renters have gaps to fill.
When calling the owners - OBSERVE the TIME ZONE difference!
I can't believe I forgot to mention that CRUCIAL fact....
Having a rental on EST while living on PST is just about the same as you all have it there, huh?!
Aloha,
I had two very good experiences using CL for short-term rentals for the same reason you are inquiring. I found a private residence in a neighborhood near Kailua,Oahu w/salt water pool for dirt cheap. Had to cancel and got every penny of my deposit back w/no problems at all. Also found a dirt cheap condo in Kailua Kona, Big Island w/same wonderful experience. Owners were honest and helpful in every sense of the word. I would suggest a tactful approach to asking questions of them to set your mind at ease. Use your email to ask pointed questions regarding the units, confirmation of availability dates and refunding of your deposit in case of cancellation. Smart folks know that email 'puts it in writing'. It's a good experience and try VRBO.com
another good source.
A hui hou.

I found my apartments through CL multiple times in different cities with no problems. You just need to be cautious, when something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.
If it's a timeshare you are renting on CL ask the owner to send you a copy of the deed (showing week/s owned) or copy of the week/s reservation to prove ownership.
Timeshare reservations are by week and any savy person renting weeks will be more than glad to provide proof.
When renting though eBay sellers or anytime you are paying with a credit card or PayPal you have a 60 day window to dispute a transaction. Meaning that even if you pay via these means if it a ways in the future they offer no protections.
PS: You can also call the TS resort to confirm the week reservation and owner status.
homeaway and vrbo offer protection guarantees for the renter if you do the entire transaction through their site.
Craigslist - while there are legit property owners, be wary of pictures that "don't look right". If the house is supposed to be in Hawaii and the landscaping looks like Midwest, the house has a basement or advertises near the beach and has a furnace... stay away. Use common sense.
