Ha, thats funny! My good friend lives up Pa'auilo Mauka and donates a Norfolk from his land to the school every year. Maybe it's for his kids classroom or something? He also sells them on the side of the road in Waimea every December.

As far as being more expensive than the mainland...We got a 7ft Noble from Home Depot for $50. Got it two weeks ago and it's doing great. My parents in Massachusetts paid $65 for theirs. So you can find them for a decent price if you shop around.

Home Depot always runs out of the trees early ever since it was built. Though I remember in 2004 they made an extra effort and got a container in 1 week before Christmas. In the morning the line was around the building as reported on the radio, so we waited until after lunch and they still had a few left when we got there. It is the place for the last container frenzy. Trees in Lawai, cool. Big Save, Kmart and the like it seems when they run out, that is it. People whom are new to the island of Kauai should be aware/advised that if they want the mainland trees, do it early.

We've got the same potted Norfolk pine tree we had last year, but this will be it's last inside Christmas since we will plant it out at the farm after this Christmas. It is about eight feet tall and it is a good thing really old houses have nine foot ceilings. The new tree in training is only about two feet tall so it will get extra water and fertilizer this year.

If they run out of Christmas trees you can always look in the garden shops for rosemary bushes which can be trimmed into a Christmas tree shape. They will be small table top sized Christmas trees but they smell good. Or in the same garden shops you can buy a potted Norfolk Island pine which is also occasionally called a Star pine, Cook Island pine and/or Australian pine.
