Moving to Hawaii for 6 mths to a yr for work... (lease, car registration)

So my ? is do I have to register my car there this will be a temporary move I will still have my "tax home" in Florida. We will be going over just to work a travel assignment for a yr.

anything else we should definetly bring with us. we will be renting our house out while we are there and storing everything, My children will be home schooled while we are there so schooling is not an issue.

What type of things can we sign our children up for to do and learn as extra for schooling.

P.S.oh we will be on Oahu, we have been there for a vacation back in 05 and 06 for 4 weeks so we decided that would be our best place for me to take an assignment and for our children as well but we will be traveling to other islands for a week here and there while there..

well about he car best thing to do is buy one there the $1100 per way to get your car from the west coast plus the trip from Fla. cheaper to buy then sell or 1 year lease it.

thanxs for the info unfortantly it makes no sense to not take it. We are actually driving to Cali first to do a 6 week assignment then shipping from there. We just bought our truck so paying on it while it sits here is not cost efficent and it will save us approx 1200 for airfare.. as well as shipping some boxes with us to ship from Cali.

You can keep your Florida plates, but you have to pay the Hawaii state road tax and get a tax sticker to put on your car. I don't know if you also have to get a safety check or not, but to keep mainland plates, you do need the tax sticker. Since we are an island, our road tax is separate from the mainland's road taxes so what you paid to Florida doesn't reciprocate to here.

There's no statewide DMV or rules... it goes by county. You didn't say where you're going to be. Check out this page, click on your county, and then click on car registration to see what the requirements are.

What interests do your children have? There are a variety of sports, dance, martial arts, fencing, cultural activities and a whole host of other fun as well as educational activities. How old are they, what are there sexes and where will you be living on Oahu?

Don't pack your vehicle with items. Matson does not allow it. I think Pasha or Horizon does, however you take a big chance on that stuff not being there when you get your truck. Any number of unknown persons will have full access to your vehicle unless it's sealed up inside a container.

Thank you all for the information, Yea we are only bringing clothes with us on the plane. none in vehicle even our car seat will be coming.

As for the boys they are 12 and 13 and like anything outdoors.

Not sure where @ yet depends where my company puts me. I am a labor and delivery RN and will possibly be either working for the Hawaii health care system or the military as a civilian .

I will like to know if is safe, i have an 11 yrs old, 18 yr old,I just applied for a job in Mauii with social services, that is what i have done for the last 8 years, I doubt they call but if they do, and I decide to move where would I go??? Is a bit pricy and social services does not pay much, can you all help me?, I have also started my prerequisits for the nursing program and will like to know if there is a college that offers RN?
