I like those who have broken rules get upset when something happens to them. If this Kid in Hawaii had stayed in the stands would the police have touched him NO. Follow the rules and nothing bad will happen. It is unfortunate that the Officer went as far as he did. With the pepper spray that is reasonable force when trying to gain control of a crowd. People need to own up for their discretions before crying brutality. I like the girl in the interview that said it really ruined the celebration of the win. I am pretty sure that storming the field ruined the celebration not the officers.

We could easily mock the news and interviewees, and imply they are not in touch with "reality" and real police brutality because there are things that happen so much worse in other places. There were some fine examples given of very harsh police action in other countries, and yet of course we know such things also happen in the US.

But here's another way to look at the situation.

This was a sad incident. People were hurt, and things got out of hand. So what can we learn?

How wonderful a place Hawaii must be, if this incident is a big news story, and if people are outraged that a policeman punched someone three times. Think about that. In how many other communities, here in the US, would think nothing, absolutely nothing of that happening? How many people would expect the police to do this? Instead, people are upset AND (this is big) the police are investigating the incident.

Really, this is weird to you because you don't expect the reaction to the situation to be so big, right? But if you think about it, it should always be a big deal. It's just that it isn't, in so many places.

For sure the fans should not have stormed the field. Most were chased back, and the main reason that the police try to prevent it from happening is because things do get out of hand. People in crowds can very easily turn into mobs. Mobs get carried away and do things that the individuals may not think they would do, or regret later. So you have to stop the situation from building.

In most ways, the police handled the day very well. There must have been hundreds of moments when things could get out of hand, and didn't. I don't like that pepper spray was used, but I wasn't there so I don't know what was going on at the moment. I am sure many more details and stories will come out of this time.

So again, I think we should all marvel at how GREAT it is that the Hawaii community thinks this is a big deal. That we don't like it, and don't think it is normal or right. We might be hicks in the eyes of some, but that's OK with me.

Hawaii is actually rather soft on crime compared to many places I've lived. I've seen murderers get 2 years of jail time or less and someone recently had their 5th drunk driving conviction and got 30 days.

No Hawaii is not a police state, just the opposite.
