A long-standing joke on the Big Island is
  • Q: "What do you say when you meet someone new on the Big Island?"
  • A: "Hi! Are you a massage therapist or a realtor."

Hilo-side is much worse than Kona-side right now, too. Long-time MTs are eating one meal a day.

Good idea. Another one, maybe that no one has tried, is to make the same offer to the people who CLEAN the rentals. Give them a free massage (they really need them), and in exchange they drop a flyer in the rental, maybe in a drawer or on the table. Or put a code on the flyer, and a booking gets a kick back to the cleaner. Have them post one up in any shared spaces, like laundry rooms or near ice machines of larger facilities.

Some of the owners of the rental units don't live here full time. So getting to them is good, but if you get to the cleaners you are getting multiple flyer drops in one contact and they are here all the time.

I feel quite the opposite as everyone else here; I moved from Maui last year (when the economy was worse than it is now), and massage therapists were still in high demand. Craigslist was full of job openings. I don't know about now, but that's how it was then. I don't think the demand for massage is going down just because the economy is bad; I think it's going up because people are becoming more interested in alternative therapies. If you can get a job at a hotel or spa, that's great, but I recommend going freelance as well. If you are good at what you do you can charge more and attract the client base that has the money to spend. These are the people that will pay handsomely for you to come to them; with a good gimmick and nice attitude you can likely earn 50-75% more than you would in a spa.

Just do a search on the Hawaii forum for "massage therapist".
Apparently, the islands draw them here as fast as real estate agents.
