I realize this is an old thread, but the advice I give to people generally is as follows:
There is still quite a bit of deep-seeded bitterness and racial unrest on the islands and in many aspects of life out there and one will encounter a "locals only" mentality. But like others have said, treat others the way you wish to be treated and you'll probably be just fine.
Many island folk possess a live and let live mindset. Unfortunately there is just as large of a contingent of island natives that hold nothing but resentment and distrust of haoles.
Remember, in the scope of history, Hawaii is a recently conquered civilization. You can't expect such bitter feelings and clinging to one's cultural identity to magically disappear in just a century. Shoot, just look at the mainland for crying out loud.
