If you can get "Island Fresh" milk, then it is local milk and will be much fresher to begin with than milk shipped over from the mainland. There are only two dairies left in Hawaii and one of them just made the newspapers in Louisiana of all places:

Waterbeds for cows, who'd a thought it? So, hey! Local milk from comfortable cows, seems like it'd be tastier, too?

The answer to the OP is indeed in the article you linked:

Sadeghi said word has spread that locally produced milk is, on average, 10 days fresher than Mainland milk, but it also helps create “hundreds of good-paying jobs here on the Islands.”

“hundreds of good-paying jobs here on the Islands.”

How do they do this from a few hundred extra cows? I have relatives in the milk business on the mainland. Maybe an extra 10 jobs, max. if you include all distribution channels.

Ah, well, they all say that about "hundreds of good jobs" no matter what business they are in. And the "good pay" is sort of a relative term, I'm thinking. I think they are going to expand to 600 cows and then up to 1,000 cows. Hmm, there's about thirty who work at the farm at the moment and there are about maybe 300 cows there, I'm guessing. Then a truck driver to take the milk to the processing place, that's in Hilo, I think. There will be another two dozen folks working there, then there will be another truck driver to take the milk to the groceries. Then folks will have to take the milk from the trucks, put it on the shelf and sell it. A few accountants along the line, some folks who sell fertilizer to the farm, uh, who else would benefit from the dairy? They can't really call all these folks their employees, though, but they do help keep them all busy.

I dunno how they figure these numbers, generally I only see about one quarter of the personnel they claim they are going to hire and at about half of what I'd consider "good pay" but at this moment, they are at least keeping some folks working.

I guess if dairy cows can get waterbeds in Hawaii, they may as well have their own masseuse and personal trainer too.

Ok, well, I dunno but it sure beats sour milk and NO jobs?

Hmmmm....maybe each waterbedded cow gets it's own human personal assistant? Hence the hundreds of jobs?
