Hi is at 6.9% and California is at 12.4% ( Where does your state rank? - CNNMoney.com ). I think I'll take your dying job market over our dead one.

I realize that population size and the lack of diversification makes it felt more in HI but it's still not hopeless. Just an observation.

The reality is, true unemployment is much higher. The methodology for counting unemployment does not take into account those who are underemployed or are "discouraged workers"...add a few percentage points to those numbers, at least.

Oahu skews the numbers for the state. The rest of the islands have much higher unemployment percentages than big, crowded Oahu.

Yea, that's the only thing keeping me from committing 100% to Big Island over Oahu.

Check both island newspapers, monster.com, etc. - not much of anything being listed for the island. Having said that - I have noticed an uptick in the last month. Hopefully, the new unemployment insurance rates for companies in Hawaii won't kill off any recovery.

Thanks. I will. I shouldn't be moving until June and I have some income coming through consulting that I do (which I can telecommute with) so I will be building that up some more as well. I think it will really take boots on the ground to properly assess the market. I can always relocate to Oahu after 6 months if I don't find ANYTHING but I've never had that happen in 30 years of working.
