Eksotia, the absolute clue that is was a scam is: The unit is equipped with recessed lighting, central air and heat... the apartment comes with two parking spots, a storage unit where you can deposit my furniture (if you don't like it and you want use your furniture). There is also a linen closet, and most importantly, a new front loading stacked washer and drier.
Very few houses have central air, the electricity is too expensive to run it but almost NONE of them have central heat. Especially on Oahu. Whoever the scammer is, they aren't from around here!
Just scanning this thread, but a quick additional note. No landlord or rental company is permitted to take more than the security deposit (equal to one months rent) and rent for the first month. If you see "pre-pay" for 'x' months, it is illegal.
Rents will continue to drop throughout 2010 in Honolulu. Just this week was an article in one of the Honolulu newspapers about foreclosures and how they were expecting Honolulu was still at the beginning stage compared to the mainland. Waiting is in your favor.
This is great news. Rental prices are unreal compared to here in Wisconsin, but we are expecting that. If the rental prices are comming down like that is the same true for buying a house or condo. How can you make sure if you rent a place the landloard is not going to default on there loan.
Craigslist is swimming with scammers. I try to sell things on Craig's list and ALL the replies are from scammers. I have taken up "scam-baiting" as a hobby. (Google that up if you don't know what "scam-baiting " is, it can be risky if you push them too hard)
Watch out for this rental scam. A manager places an ad for an opening when he may or may not even have any vacancies. You are asked to pay for a credit check and/or application fee. The application goes in the trash, the credit check is never done (but that, you can find out if a check was even done), and your fees go straight into the dirty manager's pocket. If you follow up you will be told the apartment has already been rented. BEWARE.

Interesting! I say that because I have come across ads locally where they asked for 1st and last month's rent + a deposit equal to 1 month rent, in advance. If you are paying $1500 rent - that's $4500 up front! Needless to say, we steered away from those properties.
wow ... I don't know it's illegal, in Miami it's very common to pay deposit + 1st and last month, I did it too for my current rental. When I move out end of April this year, the last rent check I give them will be on March 1st.
How much should I expect to negotiate the rent price down if the landlord agrees to move their furnishing? We have a toddler who enjoys being a toddler .. and I don't really want to end up losing the security deposit over not so nice furniture.
