Just a quick note to add to all the great info in the thread about Hawaii's Tsunami Warning...

There was a spokesperson from Hawaii's Red Cross interviewed on Hawaii News Now today. She made the point that a 3-day emergency kit is a mainland recommendation. For Hawaii, the recommendation is to stock a 5-7 day emergency kit.

My SO and I went over to Coconut Island just a little while after the warning was cancelled. I posted a slideshow here: Tsunami Saturday (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cynthia_hoskins/sets/72157623399078099/show/ - broken link)

We're thankful this turned into a non-event for Hawaii, but those impacted in Chile are heavy on our hearts tonight....

Thanks for the photos; I've never visited Coconut Island, always drove past.

Thanks for the pictures! I had wondered if there was any damage on Coconut Island from the water. It looked ferocious on the TV.

Yes... My boyfriend, Tom, took that one with his camera-phone, so the quality is not quite what I get with my BlackBerry.

(I went out thinking we were heading to the "transfer station" and to grab lunch at Ken's...not prepared for photos I'm camera-shy in general, but knew my family would complain if there wasn't at least one photo of me in the slideshow!)

The time lapse video from Hawaii News Now is up...shows the ocean receding at Moku Ola (Coconut Island).

Glad you all enjoyed the pics! It was a really beautiful afternoon, once we knew Hilo was out of danger.

Nice pictures!

Interesting that water never even covered the little island. What is the elevation of the island? 4-5 feet?

Thank you for the pictures. It great to hear that this was not the event that was feared. But also, seeing the pictures were great. It is my dream to move to Hawaii someday and seeing them made another cold Midwestern day seem not so bad.

Mahalo.
