Assuming your wife-to-be isn't fixated on spending a lot of time in the water, I think you will be fine. I actually am more likely to bring my parka to Hawai'i than my swimsuit because I love heading up to the mountains. There is certainly plenty to do that does not involve getting in the water - on Maui the road to Hana will take a full day; you can visit Haleakala, see Iao valley, go horseback riding, do a zipline, visit the Ocean Center or a museum, hike all sorts of beautiful trails, and even take a sunset sail if just lounging on the beach doesn't seem like enough. And I second the suggestion that snorkeling with a boogie board is a great way for weak swimmers to be able to enjoy the water.

I don't mean to be rude, but why would you choose to go to Hawaii if you can't swim? That just seems really dumb to me. Yes, you will absolutely miss out on things. I would go to a swimming class and learn. I think learning to swim is equivalent to learning how to drive. You can go through life not knowing, but it makes life a lot less fun! Not to offend, but I thought everyone knows how to swim by the time they are 10 or so. Maybe that's because I grew up in CA and we all have swimming pools and the beach.

Actually, I don't get any looks at all. just because you live on an island surrounded by water doesn't mean you have to know how to swim. Just like you don't have to go to the beaches all the time.

I grew up in CA and we all have swimming pools and the beach so it is interesting to me that you do not know how.

This might be more of a personal opinion rather than an actual fact.
Like me, there are plenty of locals who have been born and raised in Hawaii and don't know how to swim. What exactly are you missing out on? You can still snorkel and dive without knowing how to swim - trust me, I've done it plenty of times. But again, I go back to my point when I said that just because you live on an island surrounded by water doesn't mean you go to the beaches all the time or know how to swim.

i don't think it makes a big difference at all. there are many land based or easy water activities. hawai'i is so much more than beaches! i have friends that come here, get off the plane and never see the beach beyond their trip to and from the airport. mountains, trails, history, the possibilities are endless. if you stillw ant to enjoy the water, get a noodle and a life jacket and just keep an eye on yourself and the ocean-which anyone should be going anyways. know your limits and be careful, but you could never step foot on a beach and not run out of things to do!

THANK YOU FOR AGREEING WITH ME!

That's exactly my point, Hawaii offers so many different things to do that it's not all about the beaches! Even if you cannot swim, there are lagoons where you can snorkel around the shallow ends OR you can canoe paddle OR kayak, etc.

Nicely said.

Well, we spent 3 weeks for our honeymoon and with the exception of a few days, none of it was beach/water based. You will have LOTS to do if you never even get in the water.
