Hi,
We have been on county water for the last 6 months in HPP, and are now moving to a place with water catchment. Is bleach sufficient to kill all the bacteria and viruses? I do get asthma and am a little worried about taking showers with all that chlorine in it. We don't plan on drinking the water, but is it safe to wash dishes and so on, with just the chlorinated water? What do most people do? How common is it to have the whole house UV filters? Do they make a big difference? What about a cheaper way to do it - put a small filter on each outlet? Then I guess if you have a dishwasher that wouldn't work though. Any answers appreciated. Thanks a lot.

This site is from Australia but contains all the answers that I would have given you!

http://www.health.vic.gov.au/.../you...ter_supply.pdf

In the quarter century I've lived here in the USVI I've never had piped potable "city" water but, like most, my water comes from rainwater on the roof collected in a below-ground cistern. I've always chlorinated regularly with household (unscented) bleach and do this monthly now that I have a restaurant whose water is required by law to be tested monthly. Never had a problem and it's just a matter of personal taste choice that I drink bottled water.

As long as you put in the right amount of chlorine and don't over pour your water won't smell of chlorine at all, nor taste of it.

Anyway, this site I linked covers everything you need to know and hope it answers all your questions. Cheers!

On a properly installed and maintained system you will not be able to tell the difference between catchment water and city/well water. At least as far as smell and ph.

I live on Kauai (county water) but have a place on the BI with catchment and the water with catchment is better as far as personal hygene and washing clothes. The Kauai pulic water is very hard and spots terribly.

There are undersink mounted filtration systems that purify the water for drinking and are available from Home Depot and Costco.

"Rainwater Catchment Systems for Hawai'i" should be able to answer most of your questions. Here's a link to the PDF....
