Thanks again MD!

I did check GO but they seemed more expensive, less reliable, and not as good scheduling.

Called Kona Airport and found out which flight they thought I should take from Honolulu in order to clear security in Kona and get my flight to the mainland.

Also called Honolulu Airport to see how early I should be there. It was all good except the information lady put the fear of flight delays in me

Ack. Now I'm all angsty about not making it to Kona in time for my next flight...or... being there way early and ending my wonderful Hawaiian vacation by sitting all alone in an airport for hours while my husband is just an island away. <heavy sigh>

Aloha,

Kona is a very small airport it shouldnt take you very long to get to your gate the only thing I would check is if any mainland flights at that time.

Thank you Koa!

The Kona Airport person did check and said it shouldn't be busy at that time. So, at least at Kona, that is good news for me. Phew

Also, I was reading that Hawaiian Airlines had the number 1 on-time record for all domestic airlines last year and consistently ranks at the top for service (including being on time). That's encouraging - maybe some people just like to scare people! If so - it worked on me!

MD you are too good to me!

Thank you for that link. I'm mesmerized! I'm almost afraid to share it with my husband - he might want to drop all our other plans and stay the whole week at the volcano LOL

In other news...

The folks at Hawaiian Airlines were really kind to me about my on time questions. The flight I want has a 90-100% on time record and she said getting to Honolulu an hour ahead of time (with only carry ons) and arriving Kona an hour before my flight back to the mainland should be just fine. Ahhhhh. <sigh of relief>

So now I'm totally back in my "Omigosh I'll be there Thursday night!" <squeak, squeal> mode

Sorry to gush but you guys have been great sharing your feedback and my excitement :insert have-a-crush-on-CD-Hawaii-forum-posters smiley here:

Aloha all ... Toosie have an amazing time! OK MD gotta check that out in link been gone in moving hell for a while. Is the lava back in ocean? Toosie the only problem I ever had in Kona airport... not sure if Hilo would do the same but again very small. In and out it is great. But you have to be at Kona 40 minutes early to check in luggage. I showed up once 30 minutes from the traffic to return car rental and taken the wrong road at 1pm. Hilo am and pm no worries if not in the traffic, but am traffic plan on couple of hours depending on where coming from. But they didn't let me on the plan. Worst case issue had to stay in Hawaii for another day but it was Alsakan Air and they upgraded me to first class. Just have a great trip and noo worries it will be wonderful unless you try to do too much all at once other than experience Hawaii and chill also.

Minutes ago, got a call from friends who went tonight to the County Viewing Area. Said it was a MADHOUSE due to the huge numbers of people wanting to see the expanded and very close flow, along with a huge area of ocean entry which is much closer to the viewing area than what is has been in the recent past.

Oh MD, that's so funny. I wondered what was going on. I just happened to be here right after you posted about that blog the first time (hence me thanking you a few posts up from here). Fortuitous that I caught that and did find the blog - it's wonderful and so are you for working so hard to make sure I got the info!

Still need to pack tonight and then off I go in the morning. Thanks again to all of you for answering my queries. Or should I say - Mahalo!

Will update when I'm back - hugs!

Don't you love the Kona airport's lack of jetways? It is so 1950's to have to climb a stairway to get onto the plane.
The terminal (if you can even call it that) fits perfectly with the island environment. One of the most unique airports in the USA that I have ever been to.
