Ask them to pad your shoulder. And I was 'done" by about 10 p.m. It's not like having diarrhea where you end up with a very sore rear - this stuff just squuirts out and my rear end was fine both times.

I've had bowel prep twice with Half Lytely, and the second time I was better prepared. I recommend anything lemon or lime flavored.
1. Ate lightly the day before
2. Started drinking the stuff a few hours earlier than instructed
3. Protected my skin with a heavy layer of Vaseline
I just said goodbye to everyone and holed up in my room for several hours. It took about 1 1/2 hours to drink it all and another 2 for it to start working. Once it did it was over in 4 hours so I had the rest of my evening free to not worry and get a good nights sleep. You can't eat of course, but that's really not a problem for one day.
I have had about five colonoscopies. No one likes the prep, but just follow the directions that come with whatever your doctor prescribes to drink, and it won't be as bad as what you're imagining. By the way, except for women who have had childbirth, it is a myth that sedation is needed for colonoscopies. None of my five involved sedation, at my request, and there were no problems. The GI (specialist) who did my first three is the source of my statements, and he later became head of the GI department at a large teaching hospital. I think a lot of them insist on sedation because they would rather sedate nine people needlessly than to have to interrupt the proceduare to sedate one person who needs it; it is just easier for them that way. In none of my five did they even start an IV.
I got deathly ill from the preps you have to drink . . .so I begged for another method and got the pills, which are so much easier. A few days in advance, I started eating only light foods, soups and fruits, etc.
I had to beg, but I am glad I did. The stuff you have to drink is just nasty and I will never do it again.

Well, I know plenty of men and women who would never have a colonoscopy without sedation. It can be extremely painful. Some breeze through it, usually men, and some don't. How would you know unless you have done it?
Mine was excruciating. I have nightmares just thinking about another one in a few years.
I didn't eat much the day before the prep and that helped. My brother ate a big meal and he was going both ends, not good.
I drank what the doctor gave me and it is like drinking salt water, yuck. I had a Dr. Pepper but only sipped a little when the salt got too much for me and it helped to get it down---just tiny sips and not much of the Dr. Pepper.
The solution worked about 5 minutes later. I ran to the bathroom so be prepared. If you don't eat much it is mostly water and not a big deal.
I would rather be out. If they only do half the colon they don't put you out but why go through all that and only do half? I have heard of the tube perforating the colon (rare but it has happened) and one needs to go to surgery fast so I don't want to move and being out is better.
My brother was awake---yes same brother---and he felt nauseous, the doctor told him if he threw up to just aim over the side. Also, he heard the nurse talking about how yucky it all was---not good. LOL
There are a whole lot of different preps......pills, mag citrate, go litely , and miralax.
I preferred the mag citrate but some docs want a "cleaner" colon than it gives. By far the go litely was the hardest for me but I had that one before abdominal surgery and they took out some small intestine due to endometriosis.......
I think the one I took had a slight lemon flavor and it was not that bad at all.
