Today I had what was probably my last colonoscopy, making the total number I have had about five or six. I am 72, and I am told on good authority that they don't like to do routine screening colonoscopies after age 80 - something about greater chance of bowel perforation. So therefore, in the absence of symptoms/problems, the normal ten-year time period between colonoscopies will take me past age 80. (It had been 10 and a half years since my last one).
Once again, no sedation, and once again, no problems whatsoever. It's so much easier without sedation - you don't have to arrange for a driver, you don't have to wait the extra 30 minutes afterwards, and you are clear-headed and can do anything you want once you leave the facility.
I believe that even in the short 10 and a half year time period since my last one they have made improvements in the stuff that you drink. Crystal-light lemonade flavoring can now be added to the drink mix, and while it doesn't exactly make it taste "good", it is no longer objectionable like I remember it having been.
yep, I will be 80 in 6 months. I had mine done a couple of months ago. Because of some polyps and a few other concerns the doctor suggested 5 years for another one. He is a nice guy, good doctor, but new and young. He is trying to build up a practice I am sure. When my primary doctors office called to tell me he wanted me to repeat in 5 years the nurse said, we are must reporting this to you, I doubt you will want to repeat, right? Of course I said no way. Yes, I too have heard, after 80 not a good idea, plus I am under the impression medicare will not pay for routine ones after either 75 or 80.
Yes, drinking the crap is easier than it used to be, but still not anything I want to do one more time.

I can relate to your last sentence! Although I am looking forward to not having any further colonoscopies, if I should ever develop symptoms or problems which would make another one advisable, I would get one.
I actually liked the prep. There wasn't much of it, and I thought it tasted fine. It is just that I got really tired of "going". I think they need to develop a medication that will stop the "going" after a while!

I would also, depending on the systems and my age. Even with systems I think there comes a time when we have to say; enough is enough. I am not quite there.

My doc prescribed MOVIPREP......close to $100 with insurance. Why so expensive?
Is it really that superior? Has anyone tried it ?
After taking Miralax I was transported to ER with the chest pain.
My Family Doctor told me not to use it any more (my personal problem).
I am using Dulcolax instead together with Magnesia Cytrate.

Appreciate your input.
I thought Obamacare made screening colonoscopy and the meds free? I paid zero for mine. Is yours a screening?
I forgot the name of what I got. It wasn't the big jug. It where you had to drink so many ounces of the med then so much fluid two different times. It was still nasty! I couldn't finish the last part because I kept gagging. Doc said i was all cleaned out. I guess it helped that I followed the low residue diet for a few days before.

Edit: I think it was the prepopik stuff.
I used Prepopik a few weeks back and I didn't find it too bad-taste wise. I was afraid I didn't go enough but the colonoscopy was done and I got a good report and won't have to get another for 5 years.. I hope you got a great report too!!!

Holy Cow, I think I paid about $5 after insurance. Other than that mine have all been free: medicare covers them.
