I'm over 45 and I getting tired more and more. I've always had to take a nap around 5PM. But lately I have to lie down after dinner, etc. I think it's mostly psychological. I have a depressing life and I'm unemployed and don't do much all day. I joined a gym and it doesnt help.

This kind of fatigue will happen to you if you're getting old. But can you suggest something that might help?

I have to take an Ambien every night or I'll be up all night. Which means, I can't stay awake earlier in the day when I want to, and at night, I can't sleep when I want to.

You have to break the cycle. Your body gets used to this when you do this every day - take sleeping pill to sleep at night, take nap during day, take another nap, take another nap... Day in and day out, your body thinks this is what it should do during the day because that's what you've taught it.

Keep yourself busy. Sitting on the couch certainly makes me sleepy, but if I am out and about being active, my body doesn't have time to be tired. Start slowly... Trim your 3 naps down to 2, then once that feels comfortable, trim it down to 1, and then finally take the nap out of the day entirely. I think once you get rid of those naps you also won't have to rely on the sleeping pill anymore, which will be a very good thing.

Best of luck!

Get a blood test, your thyroid may be out of balance.

Your blood pressure could be high - that could make you tired all of the time. It could be high just because of your age or if you gained over 10 pounds.

If you don't have a medical problem, you are probably just in a rut.
I think you should force yourself to do everything that has been hanging over your head that you have probably been putting off for another day. Just say I am going to do it and usually, the more you do, the more you will want to do.
Maybe make a rule that you can't lay down until it is dark out? If you get tired, maybe you could sit or doze a little in a chair where you won't be so comfortable but will get a little power nap.

I had my blood pressure taken a few days ago and it was normal.
I stopped going to my gym for two years and did gain some flab around the waist, but my arms and legs are really skinny.

Agree completely. I began having fatigue & turns out I was hypothyroid. The meds changed everything, I'm full of energy now.

Defintely see your doctor & get a full blood work-up, because fatigue could be a symptom of many things.

If you feel depressed than discuss that with your doctor also. BTW, depression can be a symptom of hypothyroidism.

.
I take 2-3 naps a day and find it has something to do with boredom of being retired and having very little to do all day.

You need to break your sleeping pattern. Because you are napping during the day, you are needing medication to sleep at night.

When you get tired, go for a walk, call a friend, start a project. Keep yourself busy so you don't have time to nap. It will take a couple of weeks, but it will help!

The depression doesn't help either, it makes you feel lethargic. By creating tasks and making yourself busy this will help.

Check with your doctor, thyroid, peri menopause among other things.

Anemia???

Do you get drowsy after eating a meal.....insulin resistance???

I used to eat a high carb/low fat diet and would nod-off after eating a meal....that all stopped when I started eating low carb.
