My father (aged 68) is having chronic hip pain for some time. I am not sure of exact medical condition name as I don't visit the doctor with my father (I live in US, he is in India) and he is not able to explain any specific medical term for his condition over the phone.
He has had several MRI s on spine/hip area and has consulted several ortho/spine specialists. All doctors seem to attribute it to ageing and degeneration related to it. He gets prescribed for pain killers/physiotherapy sessions. But they don't seem to be helping much and he suffers a lot due to pain. Pain intensifies when he is standing/sitting. He feels much better when he is lying down/sleeping.
I will be visiting him next week. I am planning to buy some OTC medicines or cream that can help with his hip pain. I have got Bengay from Walmart. But I am not sure how effective it would be for his condition.
Can someone suggest something better.. like some cream or medicine that is more targeted towards hip/joint pains (not pain killers, pain relief types).. Also is there any dietary thing that he can follow to keep his pain under control?
Voltaren gel might help your father. You need a prescription to buy Voltaren in the US but I did a search and it looks like you don't need a prescription for it in India.
Bengay helps with sore muscles but doesn't do much for joint pain.
Okay, this is something I have used since I was literally a child of 11 (I have JRA). Conventional Doctors will not sanction this, but as I am from Hawaii we have a very long history of being open to other treatments.
It is called DMSO. I get mine through Amazon; there are different ones to choose from, the one I like has a rose scent. By law it says that it is not to be used on humans, only for animals, but I have never met an animal that needs to have a nice rose scent.
Again, I stress that western medicine discounts DMSO, but it actually works for me. My shoulders, wrists, hands, hips, ankles and feet have used DMSO for almost 40 years.
If you do decide to try this on your Father please be certain to use rubbing alcohol on the skin where the DMSO will be used, then rinse liberally win water since whatever is on the skin will be absorbed into his body once the DMSO is applied.
Feel free to PM me if you wish to discuss this in greater depth.
DMSO can only be used for a day or two before it builds up in your system. It's close to benzene. There us a topical cream that interrupts the pain signal to the brain. Works well, is OTC, one is Zostrix. Very effective but be careful about getting it in the eyes.
He probably needs a hip replacement....once the bone starts to deteriorate, there's really nothing that will help that, except replacement. Ben-gay is not going to help with bone pain.

Zostrix has capzaisin. Capzaisin does help with pain but it can be extremely painful in hot weather, if you start sweating, or if you get in a hot shower without washing it off first.
If Indias doctor and healthcare system cant help the guy i doubt theres any over the counter medication from the USA thats going to help,in fact it might conflict with medications he's already taking...
While you are over there talk to his doctor/s and find out what the real problem is. At a guess it sounds like a hip replacement is needed and for some reason he doesnt want to undergo the surgery required.
I'm definitely planning to visit the doctor and find the actual reason for his pain. I am also thinking of taking opinion from another senior Ortho and look for permanent fix.
How big is a hip replacement surgery generally? Will it be a major surgery? How long is the recovery period? Indian medical system closely follows west and is generally up to date. So any advanced surgical procedures available here should be available there too.
Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate is something that might be worth trying. Ive seen it used in similar cases with excellent results. Sometimes it took about a week before the pain went or longer. It needs to be taken every single day to be effective unless you have the time and energy to make Bone broth daily which may be less effective.
Think about this for a second. Surgery will deal with the symptoms but the cause will still be there. It may have something to do with collagen depletion which happens to everyone after a certain age (possibly 25 yrs). However, our diets do not contain enough of the building blocks to assist the body with collagen production. Although there are many causes of such pain and lots of variables, collagen depletion is definitely something to consider.
Edit:
I just remembered a great presentation on Collagen Hydrolysate.
My daughter had a hip replacement some years ago. She was off work around a month, I think. The pain was reasonably well controlled. I went for her 2nd week home. She had bed exercises to do and could not do stairs. I took her to a doc appt. She is very happy she had it done!
