Or as I have seen it happen, the pharmacy will contact the physician's office electronically to renew a prescription, the office will respond electronically denying the request because the person "is not their patient", and that is as far as it will go. If the person shows up at the pharmacy for the refilled prescription, or is contacted by the pharmacy online that the prescription has been denied, he will be informed of the reason, but it will be up to him to contact the doctor's office and either schedule a visit, or straighten it out with them.
