You don't feel anything during, depending on the type of anethesia you have.
I had a spinal block the first time and couldn't feel a thing. I had an epidural the second time and could feel pressure but no pain.
The recovery is a different matter. At that point, it's like any abdominal surgery. Yes, there can be pain as meds wear off, etc, and you could have various complications. But overall it's like any other major surgery.
I had a spinal. I could feel tugging and pulling but no pain. Later on, as I lay in on the gurney in the room where they stashed me temporarily in my morphine bliss, I realized that I could feel something starting to hurt deep down inside and the thought went through my head that if I could feel some pain while numb from the waist down and on morphine, this sucker was really going to hurt like hell when it all wore off.
And it did. But the faster you get up and move and work through the pain, the more quickly you will heal.
I had 3 csections, didn't feel a thing. Recovery was different for each one though. Key thing to do is eat lightly 2 days before and take stool softeners after delivery
.
My twins were delivered by C-section. I had an epidural and like others here I felt pressure and tugging during the surgery but nothing I'd describe as pain.
I've never had a vaginal delivery but I'm pretty sure there's more pain involved in those.
I had an emergency C-section with my first after 9 hours of intense labor. I already had an epidural in from labor so they just added more meds so I didn't feel anything. I did feel slight tugging, but none of it hurt at all. Now, once the meds wear off you will be in pain because it's a major surgery and they have to cut through your abdominal muscles. I honestly had a hard time getting off the couch by myself for 2 weeks.
My second C-section was elective. Since I didn't like the odds of a VBAC I opted for a 2nd C-section. This time I had a spinal which I honestly thought was no big deal! I barely felt anything when they did it. Much more pleasant than the epidural I had with the first delivery! They cut in the same spot, so recovery is much easier. I was up and walking around the same day. You'll still be in some pain after, but not as much the 2nd time.
With that said, pain is different for all and your doctor will make sure you have pain meds available to you for a few days if you choose to take them. Having gone trough labor and then a C-section for the first and C-section only with the second, I can tell you I'd opt for a C-section over going through labor if given a choice!!
The epidural hurt a helluva lot more than the csection part!!!
I had to have 2 epidurals at 1 time!
Recovery hurts for about 2 weeks.
