My doctor prescribed Quinine Tablets, but you can't get them in the U.S. anymore so he gave me the address of a pharmacy in Canada and I ordered them on line. I had to scan the prescription and send it in an eMail.
Since I started drinking Tonic (with quinine) I haven't had a problem with leg cramps. According to my doctor, the quinine was taken off the market because FDA said no formal studies have been conducted on quinine for leg crams (never mind that it works!).
I'd like to eliminate the sugar which is in tonic, but would have to go to diet tonic and don't want to do that. Fat Freddy, I sent you a pm -- would like to have the Canadian address of your pharmacy.

Take a good Calcium-Magnesium supplement, at least 1200 mg of Calcium. Everyone I know who has had leg cramp problems (even during pregnancy) has found Calcium and Magnesium helps. Primarily it is the Calcium that helps.
I agree Cal/mag helps a lot. I would get leg cramps when I had a combination of not enough sleep on days that I did strenuous exercise that I wasn't used to, like mountain trails etc. I find that a regular one or two mile walk also helps a lot, and haven't had cramps since I began the walks years ago...Did I mention get enough sleep?...That is important.
I've had leg cramps for many years. Lower leg, upper leg and sometimes higher. Even had toes cramp in the curl up position. A doctor prescribed Quinine and it did a good job. I have some left and the container is dated 2006 so they were still available then. You have to take them every day to be fully free.
I woke several years ago with a really bad one and instead of stiffening to fight it I relaxed and thought "Oh you just do your thing". It faded away so fast that it left no residue of pain or soreness.
I couldn't wait for the next one to defeat. It went on like that for months. I could beat it every time and then I lost it. I couldn't do it anymore. Alas, until a couple of months ago I managed it again. I fear them no longer and I can knock it down almost as quickly as it comes on.
You have to be quick and stop fighting it instantly. Think RELAX, let it go and it will disappear so quick it will surprise you.
My dad used to have absolutely horrible leg crams, and he drank Gatorade regularly to alleviate his pain, as directed by his doctor. The combination of electrolytes (the their mode of delivery) in Gatorade apparently works very well for him.
Of course, there are the calories to consider here, but I am also pretty sure they make a diet version . . .
A cup of dill pickle juice, and some ibuprofen. Something about the electrolytes, and the tumeric is an anti-inflamatory. Takes the edge off long enough for the ibuprofen to kick in.
Also heating pads and hot/cold/hot alternating shower. Always ending with warm.
