I have begun a 2nd try at it. So no egg yolks, no coconut oil. No avocados. I like all 3 those but no-no on Ornish diet for heart health.

Limiting (trying too but no there yet) all nuts & seeds. I know some allowed but not as much like I used to eat. I have no heart probs says my cardio doc but been well over a yr since saw him.

Due for stress/treadmill test -- just been too lazy to go & rather workout daily on my own w/ weights & some cardio few times/wk.

So anyone follow Ornish diet to reverse or prevent cardio probs?

Even tho my total cholesterol is always about on the 120-130s -- I eat no yolks, etc.

I know its a risk for cancers tho w/ very low chol. Can't win either way.

Ok, just wanted to ask opinions on Ornish & should I eat egg yolks, coconut oil, avocados or nuts/seeds at all?

Hasn't anyone heard or tried this diet yet? It has been around, really, longer than the Mediterranean which is kind of where I came from as far as diet is concerned. It is just more rigid & specialized on cardiac health or actually reversal, of any already existing coronary plaque from all the daily stresses in ppl's lives.

Ornish is regarded to be somewhat "out to lunch" by many. His experiments have been routinely undermined by poor technique. Like any/all of these diets there are champions and detractors. Low fat diets have been shown to be instrumental in avoiding heart attacks just as they have been shown to be meaningless in avoiding heart attacks and of undetermined efficacy. Pick a study.

Ornish's diet is unfollowable. Plus it is the very definition of malnutrition / unbalanced diet since the nervous & endocrine systems rely on fat. Insufficient useful protein is another shortcoming.

Also, why all the obsessive compulsive disordered fixation people have over heart disease? Which heart attack are people trying to avoid? Somebody has one at 85 or 90 and they think it can be avoided if they just follow an unfollowable diet for 60 yrs? Whoopee!

As far as "removing plaque" from arteries? Ornish's study results are routinely questioned and cannot be duplicated. (Like much of ALL clincial research) And there are so many confounding factors even he cannot swear that simply eating no fat (an unhealthy diet) is the reason arteries are unclogging. Even Atkin's diet reversed people's symptoms if not their plaque doing the exact opposite of Ornish. What is the functional difference?

Thought you have already related other health problems resulting from trying to follow crazy-strict diets. Intestinal problems, binge eating, etc. How is this going to be any different? This diet may be presented as heart healthy, but if you can't stick to it or it makes the rest of you sick, what benefit will that have? Suspect your problems aren't based on any diet, its the underlying OCD. Deja vue all over again OP.

It is a very hard diet to stick with, and really when it comes to diet the most important thing to consider is if it is a way of eating you can do long term.
Ornish has been out of the spotlight for quite a while now, but he was fairly well regarded with his diet because there were good results with his patients. I think it has fallen out of favor because it is so dang hard to stick with. And studies have shown that fat isn't really the enemy we once thought it was.

The Mediterranean diet is a much easier plan to follow. I base my eating on the Mediterranean diet simply because I love the foods and avocados, nuts, eggs, and olive oil are staples in my house.

If as you say, my health probs result from crazy diets, you are wrong.

Nope. My diet is heavy with avocadoes and nuts because I love them. Best thing for cardio is cardio!

Disagree. You ARE what you eat, period.

I know guys who never did cardio for bodybuilding shows back in the day but restricted foods & were more ripped & cut up -- then guys eating more foods but doing tons of cardio. You can NEVER burn off alot of cals --
even if you did 24hrs/day cardio -- if your diet is a wreck.

Also, I've tossed out; avocados, egg yolks, full fat dairy & all cheese. Handfuls of nuts/seeds are ok. No oils or limit as much as I can. Olive is only 1 ever I use sparingly. No coconut foods of ANY kind. This is NOT hard for me re that stuff mentioned so far up above.

No red meat or white meats (no poultry) & only fish as in salmon, farm trout, sardines, herring, mackerel, oysters, tuna (very rarely) & catfish.

That is the protein other than some occasional tempeh, whey powder or non fat dairy as in yogurt/kefir. Alot of spices, cocoa, oats, whole wheat pasta, spag. squash etc.

Brown rice or buckwheat, quinoa, all kinds of beans & then tons of veggies (no tomatoes, limit nightshade like spinach & peppers, etc) & most fruits tho limit high glycemic load high sugar fruits or limit them.

V little processed foods & air popped popcorn as snacks. Easy to eat this diet mentioned so far. Yes, it isn't his PERFECTLY, but alot closer than Medit. diet alone. It (what i try to eat daily) throws out some Medit. diet foods.

Why the extreme cardio healthy diet when you have no cardio problems?

Eat in moderation, eat a variety.

You are what you've already eaten, to a great degree I would agree. But you may want to do some more research, as nuts and avocados are considered heart healthy foods.
If you are just interested in being ripped, well that's just fine, but if you want a strong heart there is no substitute for cardio. A guy like Fred Beckey had a garbage diet for many years but had excellent cardio because he was climbing all the time.
