About 10% of people who are prescribed lisinopril for HBP get a dry hacking cough as a side effect.

I know this because I'm one of them. If you have experienced this:

1. How long were you taking lisinopril before you started coughing?

2. How long were you coughing after you stopped taking it?

I had it for a very short time when I first started taking lisinopril, then it stopped. Haven't had any trouble with it at all since then, and it's been maybe 15 years or so.

I had it, so asked Dr to change medications. It was some years ago, so I don't remember how long, exactly, but under a month I think.

I went on it after my bypass. Cough started immediately. After a month or so, I asked doc to switch and he did.

Cough went away almost immediately

FYI:Why Do Antihypertensives Cause Cough?

https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/739521

Quote:
The mechanism of cough is likely multifactorial. ACE inhibitors prevent the breakdown of bradykinin and substance P, resulting in an accumulation of these protussive mediators in the respiratory tract. In addition, bradykinin can stimulate the production of prostaglandin.[1] This side effect is not dose-dependent and often precludes the use of all agents within the drug class.

The ace inhibitors have that as a side effect, but the arb's don't usually.

Cardiologist started me on lisinopril after a mild heart attack. I'm expecting it to be temporary as my normal BP isn't very elevated. Noticed a very slight cough at first, but I had dutifully read the medication leaflet so sort of expected it...was that auto suggestion or a real effect? It seems to have subsided. Hasn't been enough to bother me. A long time friend of mine has been on it for years and he does notice the cough.

One minor thing I have noticed is a runny nose; when I'm out in the cold it turns into a faucet a lot faster than it used to!

My mom went on lisinopril as the first medication to control high blood pressure and developed a cough about a month after she first started taking it. She didn't know why she kept coughing so went to the doctor because it was getting annoying because she coughed pretty frequently. It also gave her cold-like symptoms.

She was changed over to one of the beta-blockers and has had no side effects with them outside of some drowsiness at first and her blood pressure is under control.

I don't recall exactly but the cough went away pretty quickly after she went off the lisinopril; I think it was a week or two.

My dad also was on lisinopril and had some of the coughing but it didn't bother him that much so he didn't switch medications.

I had the cough when I took it. I also got a malar rash. When I stopped taking it, the rash cleared up within a couple of months.
