As someone who was not brought up in the US, all snack items in the US taste extraordinarily sweet AND salty to me.

Agree with this. Sugar is one of the most addictive substances on earth. Both sugar and salt are a problem, but sugar is the root cause of obesity. Not only that, but diagnosed diabetes increased from 1% in 1958 to 8% in 2015, largely due to the increase in sugar in the American diet.

The powerful food industry will do everything in their power to resist regulation of sugar and salt in their products. Too many billions to be made at the expense of public health.

In the 1970s and 1980s the government and commercial food industry began villianizing saturated fat and removing it from most of our foods whenever possible. They had to do something to keep the food from being bland and flavorless so they began adding sugar, lots of it. They hyped the low fat diet as the healthiest diet. Over the last 40 years as our sugar consumption has increased exponentially we have seen an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome and other serious ailments. When an individual consumes sugar their is a spike in their insulin response. When they consume foods all day long that have large amounts of sugar in them they're pretty much creating a condition where their insulin is continuously elevated. Most of the added sugars in our foods are in the form of fructose, which the liver cannot process. All of the research for this is readily available for anyone who wants to seek it out.

yes over consumption of sugar is not a good thing for you, but when you are overconsuming sugars you are also overconsuming calories which leads to weight gain. It is the overconsumption of calories that causes all the issues, not just sugar in of itself.

Modern wheat has a higher glycemic index than table sugar, we need to get to the core root of the problem regarding the obesity epidemic. As I have mentioned many times on the forums, follow the exponential growth in the obesity curve after modern wheat was introduced into the food supply in the mid 1980's. The percentage of obese AND overweight people went from 14% in 1984 to around 70% in 2020.

Of course, but added sugar packs a lot of excess, invisible calories into foods that shouldn't have so many. It makes controlling caloric intake that much harder. In addition, eating foods with excess sugar just makes people crave more food.

Modern wheat found in the vast majority of processed, frozen, an fast foods is an appetite stimulant, (food addiction), as well as changes to (brain chemistry) for many people, leading to increases in sales for the food processing companies and big agricultural conglomerates. It pads the profits of big pharma as they wouldn't be increasing their margins if the population wasn't absurdly obese, requiring more medications, treatments, and surgeries.

If this were true then why do other countries with much higher per-capita wheat consumption have much lower rates of overweight and obesity? Fact of the matter is obesity is a complex issue that involves many other factors such as lifestyle and caloric consumption.

Umm no, these foods are highly palatable because they contain combination of high amounts of processed fats, processed carbs and sugar/sodium.

Invisible calories? Does such a thing exist or did you just make that up? These foods are highly palatable because they also contain high amounts of processed fats and carbs and with the combination of sugar makes them less satiating. If it's the sugar that people crave why aren't people over consuming sugar packets?

Sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup, is most definitely the problem!

AS well as high sodium and cheap fats and highly processed white flour.

But 130 lbs. of sugar per year per person is causing -- or greatly contributing--to the obesity epidemic. Among other diseases. Science agrees.
