I used diphenhydramine/Benedryl as a sleep aid for years. Very effective. But then I read that it is associated with an increased risk of dementia or Alzheimer's disease in older people, and stopped taking it. (I understand lack of sleep is also associated with an increased risk of dementia. Ironic, huh?)
I've tried chamomile, valerian, melatonin; none did the trick for me.
I seem to sleep worse when I have alcohol.
I currently take magnesium at bedtime, and occasionally a thc gummy. I also do lengthy, elaborate recitations (like my "Insomniac's Alphabet", words relating to sleep for every letter of the alphabet) in my head to drive out whatever thoughts may be keeping me awake.
All those usually work, but sometimes I still have trouble sleeping.
I've read that most insomniacs are plagued by one specific sleep pattern disorder, such as:
Trouble falling asleep
Waking after a short sleep, and can't get back to sleep
Waking too early
Sadly, I seem to experience all of them. Last night, I enjoyed the latter two.
While CBD and THC are from the same plant, the cannabis plant, they are very different. Both can increase relaxation and sleepiness, improve mood, and relieve pain, but CBD does not have the same psychoactive properties that THC does.
There are different kinds of CBD. It’s good to know what kind you are using because some may have traces of THC in them. Knowing more about CBD and THC can help you make informed decisions about what you choose to consume.
Our adult son has issues sleeping. He takes Natrol Melatonin and the Bach Flower Remedy together, and it works quite well. The melatonin alone did not work that well, but combining the two is effective for him. I did see some European manufacturer combined the two, so that it would be safe to do that.
Also, always do research on all the side effects online, as the package just has the "highlights", which we learned the hard way with another OTC med for pain.
Again, he's WAY overpaying for that name brand melatonin when a generic would work just as well. I'm a little disturbed that more people don't seem to understand this concept -- or care... I guess it really does pay to advertise?
CBD is legal everywhere in the US. You can only buy THC where it's legal. It varies by state. In some states you can buy cannabis and other states you can buy what is known as Delta 8 which is derived from the hemp plant.
